prompted by shenanigans over in the cafe i just wonder what proportion of KVR members are still using dial-up connections and how many of us are on faster pipes ...

... talking about home use mainly - not whether you use a faster connection at work to dl large files (i myself would NEVER do that ... )

Very fast :D

And I will never go back to dial up - its a different world - though it took ages for this speed to be available where I am.

Best regards,

10 Mb line here, and it's very addictive. I would never move to a dial'up area...

NTL Broadband...750k. Fast enough fo me at the moment.

I use dialup at home. No point in shelling out £15+ per month when I get a phone bill informing me that I have spent <£30 per quarter on internet calls. Sure the pages would load faster, but do I want to spend at least an extra 50% just for that?

I use dialup at work as well. There is a 2Mb pipe out of our site into the head office, which in turn has a 10Mb pipe into the outside world. I use this as required, however, there are times when I would prefer not to be tracked by the firewall, and so go around the edges. Actually I blatantly go out of another door!

I think that maintaining support by encouraging 128kbps encoding, etc is a good thing. And, let's be honest, the actual audible difference is rarely so acute as many make out. (ducks for cover..)

Same here.

I think they are planning to upgrade the service this summer though - I read 2MB for the same price somewhere.

Using cable modem. Have no idea how fast it is. I just know it's fast. Quicker than sharing a T1 at work with 1200 employees.

Comcast Cable. Very good service and they just upped our bandwidth to 5 meg.
And all life's fears
Can invade my ears
I can handle it

It was 600k, and got upgraded for free in August last year. I had a look at 1meg or 1,5, but it was nearl double the price then...

1Mbit dsl.
I could never go back to dialup, even though it saved me much needed money.
everytime i visit my dialup friend, i am reminded what a major PITA it is :D

I know. It was 500 when I started out with them in fact so I've already had 2 free upgrades. But I did read (BBC website I think) that they are planning to offer a 2MB service for the same price we're currently paying to compete with some of the other providers who are already providing those speeds so my hope is that we would get that upgrade for free (or prices should be reduced for the 750 service)

1.5 mbit DSL. Will eventually upgrade to 3 MB one day, but I really don't feel the need to right now.

FWIW, I'm occasionally surfing KVR at my GF's place (she's on a 56k modem) - and it's got to be the most useless site ever, with all those flash banners taking AGES to load (even in times the server isn't broken).
There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.

I can go fast enough to get a very dissapointed grimace on the missus' face... :hihi:

I have 4 mbit cable modem at the casa and shared OC-3 here at the office.
