Urgent help needed! I'm trying to create a piano improvisation part for a jazzy-hiphopish version of "HappyBirthday2U" for a friend's birthday, but I can't figure out chords that would sound right and fit the melody. The standard chords for the tune are basic non-7th major chords (G-B-D, F#-A-D, G-C-E), but they lack those rich jazzy harmonies I'm after. I've tried modifying them by dimnishing or augmenting, adding 6ths, 9ths and stuff, but they no longer fit the melody...

So - anybody knows what substitute chords could be used instead of those three?

Thanks in advance!

I'm no harmony expert but if I may.... Just look for chords that share common tones with the melody note. You could even make the melody note be the 7th or the 9th or something like that. Hope that helps a bit.
