Imagine the delight I felt yesterday as I went from Sound Forge 6 and Sonar 3 to 7 and 4 respectively. But the party really started when I just now discovered myself unable to load VSTs registered in the Cakewalk adapter in SF7, which had loaded in 6. I don't see any updates later than the versions of each I have, and no mention of this bug. So while I write to Sony and Cakewalk and wait for thier response, I thought I'd see if any of y'all had any insight into or experience with this. Thanks in advance, if only for your comiseration.

Sorry to hear that, John. I don't have an answer (don't have SF), but what version is your Cakewalk wrapper at - I think mine's at 4.4.4 now, maybe updating that will help? Did you remove SF6? If not, do they still work in SF6? Do you mean unable to load as in won't load and report an error, or as in aren't even accessible? Does SF support VST natively, or does it rely on the wrapped versions?

Sorry, not trying to popquiz you, but sometimes just asking questions triggers some insight.

Thanks for the sympathy, Mike. I did uninstall 6, I have 4.4.3, so that may be worth following through on. Where did you find that? I don't see any updates for the Adapter when I go on the Cakewalk site. What happens is that after loading a VST, when I try to play the preview in the plug-in chainer, I get an exception message and all audio stops and I must close the program to restore operations.

By the way, the thing you guessed about is going to be announced soon. See:

for the newest vague yet utterly transparent hint. And there is some relationship between how well my audio editor works and that thing happening sooner, so keep your fingers crossed.

I've heard of plugins not showing up in Cakewalk Sonar 4, even though they worked in version 3 of Sonar. However, I have no experience with Sound Forge.

Are these plugins at least showing up properly in Sonar 4? If not, you need to install and run the Sonar plugin manager. (It's a little utility found on the Sonar 4 installation CD.) With this utility, you can tell Sonar whether to ignore, or not ignore, certain plugins it finds on your hard drive. If it weren't past 3AM here, I would go into a little more detail, but the proper use of Plugin Manager can often make a plugin show up and work properly in Sonar 4. I have no idea if it has any effect on those same plugins then being able to work inside Sound Forge.

good luck,

(I really need to get some rest, for now.)

Hmmm doesn't strictly sound like a wrapper issue or Sonar to me, really. Sounds more like the SF install didn't take correctly, or you're not using the same drivers as in SF6 - do you need to select your default drivers and haven't or something?

I'm asuming that SF only sees VST's that are wrapped, though, right? It doesn't natively support them, or do you know? If it natively supports them, I don't think Cakewalk is in the picture unless Sonar 4 is having issues as well (which I do have, so fire away if need be). Also, ditto what McLilith said re: Plugin Manager if there is any issue of them not showing in Sonar. FWIW I did demo SF7 while using Sonar4PE and had no problems that I recall, but I only gave it a half-hearted look because I have Audition.

Regarding the adapter, mine's definitely 4.4.4. I think it may have been part of the Sonar 4.02 update, which did have VST adapter maintenance: http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/kb/kb2005242.asp

:dog:I saw that earlier, but didn't make the connection. I thought you were just posing a humorous question. Anyway, can't wait, should be sweet. :hyper:

I'm in the same state as McLilith (and not far from you I don't think) so it's pushing 4AM here - gotta work in a few hours, so that will have to do it for me tonight. Feel free to follow up via PM or email or what have you if need be.

G'night KVR

mn and McLilith, thank you both. I too am finally for bed and will take all this up again after getting back to work in the afternoon.

All VSTs show up in both places. SF is DX only, though version 8 promises native VST support, therefore those plugs must come in via the wrapper.

I will do as suggested with the plug-in manager, though all are present and accounted for I should clean up. Then I will sort out the Sonar updates.

Thanks again and I'll let you know how things are going.

There was a problem with VST plug-ins wrapped in the VST Adapter that came with (I think) 4SONAR .01 when used in other hosts. The version that comes with 4.02 fixed the problem - just do an update to 4.02.

Sonar update 4.0.2 did the trick. Thanks y'all, especially my good friend mn. I will never tell or laugh at another West Va. joke again.

In the Windows registry, Sound Forge keeps a cache of installed DX plugins. You can go in to the registry and delete the cache, and SF will rescan for all installed DX plugins anew. I'm still on v6, but have had to do this a few times before.

Can't remember the key location but it'll be something like hkey/local machine/software/sound forge/dxcache
