Rhino suddenly crashes Sonar 4

This is grim indeed...Rhino is my favorite synth.
As of today, every time I insert it into my synth rack, Sonar crashes.
All of my other synths still open fine.
Existing projects using Rhino still play the Rhino sounds...wtf can I do about this?

Do a diskcheck, then reinstall Rhino, then do a rescan-and-reset of the VST-DX adaptor...

That did it!
I just reinstalled the demo from the site, and it took care of the corrupted file. Thanksfully, it retained all my presets and reg file.
I feel whole again.

OK.
'Tick was unable to figure out what's going on.
If I completely uninstall Rhino 2 and install it again, it works for awhile. Then it happens again.
Complete crash. And it shuts down Sonar's audio engine until a system restart.
I keep thinking it's fixed...and it is, temporarily. None of my other synths cause this. At this point, Rhino is unuseable for me.

I have a similar problem in Sonar 3. I hadn't used Rhino for a while then was using it again the other week and sometimes the audio engine in sonar would stop and sometimes it would crash completely. I hadn't connected the problem directly to Rhino but I'll do some more checks and see if I can reproduce anything consistently.

It doesn't happen with tracks that already have Rhino in them...but it happens instantly when I insert a new Rhino, whether the track is new or older.
Complete crash before even the GUI pops up. In fact, that is what seems to cause the crash. Opening the gui.

You mean, it doesn't crash if you insert the plugin but don't open its GUI ?

I'm not sure how to insert it without opening the GUI.
It happens when I go to:
Insert - DXi synth - Insert DXI Options - OK
(in Sonar 4)
Each time you insert a new synth, it pulls up the GUI for tweaking.
If I have a song that's already got Rhino in it, I can click on it in the synth rack and the GUI opens.
It's when I insert a brand new instance of Rhino into the synth rack. When it goes to open up the GUI, a "Sonar.exe needs to close" dialog box opens, and it crashes. Like I said, if I reinstall it (or delete the .tmp file), it will open 4-5 times, then the same thing occurs, eventually.

I'll add that this never occurred even once before I installed a demo of M42 Nebula. I have a feeling the Synthedit talons crippled something Rhino needs when it's wrapped...I deleted Nebula instantly (it never did more than beep and sputter for me) and from then on, I noticed this randomly occurring problem with Rhino.
Maybe I'll try a different VST adapter for Rhino...(?)

I just tried opening up Rhino again from the synth rack in Sonar. The Rhino file must have been corrupted in the last crash - the top section of the Rhino gui is blank and the controls on the bottom section aren't responding. (This is using the Cakewalk VST adapter) - I'll try removing and reinstalling

tried uninstalling and reinstalling (and re-registering in adapter) Rhino 2.02 and it still stops the audio engine every 5 - 8 patch changes. (PC crashed completely once after audio engine had stopped)
Then removed 2.02 and installed 2.0 - couldn't reproduce problem.
Removed 2.0 and installed 2.2 - again audio engine stopped after several patch changes....

Jeff,
Yeah I can dig it up for you.
Alpi,
It looks like Rhino 1.x on this screenshot. You really should upgrade

Ah, so that'll be the 'downgrade' bug thenBig Tick wrote:

I'll try 2.02 with DirectiXer tonight and see if that makes any difference, maybe Rhino 2.02 and Cakewalk adapter just don't like each other....

Most definitely. Get DireciXer. I use both just to be safe.JeffSanders wrote:
