What sequencer allows you to step imput notes/chords in step recording instead of using a drawing tool...other than P5. The reason I need something other than P5 is because you can't save anything sequences as SMF.

I need a sequencer/host that can do both of these things...And I have zero interest in DAW software like Sonar, Cubebase, etc...

FL demo doesn't seem to like my Proteus X very much. I saw the piano roll, but nothing where you input like click a 1/4 not and then play my chord on the controller...then enter an 1/8 rest, etc...

Does eXT have a demo, and does it hold DXi and VSTi very well?

In FL there's a step record button on the menu near the other options or hit Ctrl-E.

eXt has a demo (see the list at top right) and is great at hosting VST plugins etc., but you'll need a wrapper for DX ones.

Even though it can't host anything, can Reason save as SMF and can you step record inputting notes with the controller instead of drawing too. The reason I ask about this is because I know music theory fairly well, but my playing the keys is terrible other than one handed finger playing...

not sure about the .smf thing (what format is that ??? ) ... but tracktion 2 will have (has) a step entry mode ...

no clue 'bout the smf stuff though

p.s. please fill me in if you find other hosts that support step entry. especially if you find one that has pdc (plugin delay compensation), and freeze, too =)

I can't think of a host I've used that doesn't have this feature. But, on Cubase for example it is rather painful to use. Not it's strong suit for sure. It's still there to use though.

Usually the best step edit programs are the notation software packages. Sibelius step entry is the bomb. But it sucks for regular MIDI work.

I know in Sonar and a lot of them you can use step record...but you have to use a draw tool. You cant select a haf note and then press the keys on a controller to input the chord...you have to draw it with the pencil.

About Reason, I was wondering if you can do this and also export your sequence data as a standard midi file (smf).

no, step recording means you don't have to DRAW the notes. you RECORD them with your midi controller STEP by STEP.

look it up.

ALL of those hosts I mentioned should support step recording (playing in notes and chords non-realtime).

No really though. You can't do it in Sonar. I've tried amny times...and there is nothing in the manual about it.

what you are looking for is one that will allow you to set a "initial note length" and then progress in length as you hold the keys. A lot of sequencer that have step recording only allow you to set the length of the input note via mouse click. If you want a different note length you have to reach over and choose a new length. Which pretty much makes it a waste of time really.

Host/Sequencer question. Please help.
