I was reading in CM magazine that some people, when mixing down, put VW on every track. That is, they use a very "mild" setting on the effect, just to "warm" up the track....every track.

I think they are referring to the pre-mastering mixdown phase.

Does anyone actually do this?

Yes :D

i dunno...i rarely use VW anymore...it has a harsh digital edge i can't stand anymore since i had the chance working with real tube gear.
the warming voxengo plugins are getting much closer.
i love the VW interface though, and it's 99% there...i hope it will be updated.

Agreed. VW on all tracks would be mix destruction.

VW masks the spirit in an acoustic instrument's tone. I'd much rather use a UAD-1 la2a, Pultec or Fairchild to achieve the warming purpose.
Or HarmoniEQ. HarmoniEQ sounds pristine and warm without farting on an instrument's nuances and subtleties in tone.

It might be easier to judge if you invite them over here see if they'll display some samples!

I notice that about CM magazine!!

Man do they have a hardon for VW. Personally I think it can really take the vibrance out of a track!

I use VW once for all channels and maybe one or two by themselves to warm up an analog emu.

Of course it depends on the source material. VW can work... sometimes.

However, seems like every time I listen to something I mastered using VW today, I can only hear the grit and digital "grunge" that I must've heard as "warmth" a year or two ago.

I find that boosting the lows with Pultec Pro, or adding 1-2db of compression with the LA2A plug can get me where I want to be with fewer artifacts. Voxengo's AnalogFlux Tape Bus can work well sometimes, too. Again... it totally depends on the source material.

I don't know about VintageWarmer, but I put Amplitube on every track. :hihi:

hmmmnnn ... id have thought a VW on every track (no matter how mild) is probably overdoing it ...

... however ... one instance slapped over the whole mix can often work wonders ...

Slightly tangential, but I used to put Dominion (the "Poor Man's Vintage Warmer" :hihi:) on every track, and wondered why my mixes had so much mud and mush... but putting in on the master and maybe one or two tracks does a great job. Same with (the demo of) Warmifier.
Wait... loot _then_ burn? D'oh!
