Korg has just released their new flagship keyboard workstation synth, the Oasys Studio. It comes in 2 flavors: a 76 key synth action keyboard for $7,999.99 and a 88 key piano action keyboard for $8,500. You can check out the specs at www.sweetwater.com - Sweetwater is also hosting a forum on the new Oasys where many people have posted their impressions of the new synth and also compared it the the Neko "Plug In Station" keyboard. The Oasys brings back Wave Sequencing and Vector Synthesis along with Sampling, 600 MB sample ROM, Analog Emulation Synth Engine and Organ Emulation Engine, etc., etc.

Yeah, I'll do the same, but I'll blow the $8,000 on a mega Kyma system.KrunietZ wrote:i think i'll stick with my pc

Back in the late 70's through the early 80's, I believe it was a company called New England Digital that produced a synth called the Synclavier. It was used by rock stars like Pete Townshend of the Who, Frank Zappa of the Mothers of Invention and John McLauglin of the Mahavishu Orchestra. I have no idea what one of these cost but I guess it was probably in the $20,000+ range. Anybody actually know?
Another pricy synth was the Fairlight. I actually saw an ad in Keyboard magazine in the late 80's that had the text message: "HOW MUCH FAIRLIGHT DO YOU NEED? $10,000?...$20,000?....$30,000?"
The only user of the Fairlight I am aware of was Jan Hammer. (The guy who did the soundtrack for a weekly police show called "Miami Vice").
Regarding the Korg Oasys Studio, I forgot to mention that the Oasys also has a built in Karma synth and a 10" adjustable-angle color touch screen. But no physical modeling (yet).
I can't afford one either but its nice to know Korg finally released a Wavestation enabled synth with resonant filters. (I wonder if the sample playback engine does portamento that can be used in conjunction with the Wave Sequencing and Vector playback?)
I have the Korg Legacy Wavestation plug in but it's disappointing in that the weak, non resonant filters from the original Wavestation keyboard were copied to the Plug In with no improvements!

Try $100,000.00US for a fully loaded Synclavier or Fairlight.
The PPG's and Emu sampler were much more affordable at 8 to 15 grand each.
OAYSYS - was to have originally been a Analog Model synth like their little Z1. Then it was going to be a PC Soundcard Synth I believe. And finally it comes out as a $8500 'workstation'....
You ain't got a thing, if you ain't got da bling.

oasys WAS a PC soundcard synth ...
... art of noise made AT LEAST 2 fairlight owners with jan hammer ...
... but 8 grand is still a HUGE wedge for a synth

Synth collectors would often vote on what would be their one "Desert Island Synth" that they could be happiest with.
What if that "Desert Island" had no electricity to power their Oasys? I guess that would be more like Hell.

Tying in with another recent thread, Peter Gabriel loaned Kate Bush his Fairlight for the Hounds of Love album. It's all over it.farlukar wrote:more...pHz wrote:... art of noise made AT LEAST 2 fairlight owners with jan hammer ...
afaik Boris Blank has one as well.
edit: seems Kate owns two these days
