Converting Mac Protools Files without Protools on a PC

A friend gave me a multitrack from Protools (Mac) to remix. It is just the audio with no-session info. but they are exactly the same file size so i assume he's exported them all from the same start and end point.
my problem is:
1. The files have no extension, I assume they are sounddesigner files.
2. I am on a PC and don't have Protools
3. Nothing I have seems to be able to open them (soundforge says file not recognised).
is there a way to just convert them all to .wav or .aiff?
or some way i can use the files on PC?

If the files have no extensions, you won't be able to open them.
This is really simple just rename them with adding *.aiff then import.

Well they could be Sound Designer, AIFF or WAV, Protools on a Mac can use any of these. Sound Designer (.sd2) won't be recognised on a PC as it has no resource fork. Ummm call him up and ask what they are. And have you tried adding .wav ?SpasBoy wrote:that doesn't work.

i opened one of the .finename files and it says amongst the weird characters
"Sd2fMOUP"
which i assume may imply they are in fact SD2 files.
so am i screwed?

Hey ...
Open them as RAW files in Sound Forge. Set the correct bit-depth and sample rate (16 bit or 24 bit, and usually 44,100Hz), and then select "Big Endian (Motorola)" for byte order, and the number of channels.
They should open fine. I've done this dozens of times for exactly the same thing. Record labels LOVE sending ProTools sessions, even if you don't have a ProTools system.

He did it at a studio and doesn't have Protools himself. just the data.

the raw sort of works - but they playback to fast?
the pitch is wrong / too high?

I assume this is caused by having the raw set to the wrong sample rate. - but even at 32kHz they are too fast.
they wouldnt' be 24bit, 22.5 kHz would they?
that just seems weird.

It's probably a 48KHz vs. 44.1KHz problem. Try a few options, you'll get it.

yeah i tried a lot - it only seems to come out right at 22.5
so they have 24bit 22.5kHz files??
doesn't that seem a little odd?

I sounds like you're getting close, but I thought I'd chip this in for posterity. Assuming the session version is low enough (and I do since you can grab individual files) then you might consider a tool like MM-EDL or Cuibono-Soft's EDL Convert. I use the latter and in one gig it paid for itself in time saved. They have a demo, and if you're so inclined you might want to give it a try. While it's still a SloFools world, it's well worth considering.
I can't wait for AAF to take hold - and stabilize - but then again, Digi will probably still end up knee-capping it.
