Who cares what the Synclavier and Fairlight costed?
They were the first on the market so they could charge whatever they wanted. What revolutionary concepts does the Oasys bring that we can't get A LOT cheaper by getting some softsynths + decent controller.

A fully loaded Synclavier, including the first Direct-To-Disk recorder capable of holding a whole album at 44.1 was about $250k. I recall seeing Michael Jackson and Madonna onstage rigs with two Synclaviers, plus a ton of other gear.
In early 1994 I bought a Kurzweil K2000. I recall many people calling it 'The Synclavier of 90's'. What an understatement, and it costed about $5.5k.
I checked the OASYS at NAMM, and watched many of the showmans demoing it. It's a monster beast for sure in terms of sound production.
I think the OASYS value could be in a virtual studio represented by:
1- 76/88 keys weighted controller.
2- Receptor
3- Kontakt, B4 and Minimonstah. Those three would replace the sample player, the organ and the VA (put your favorite replacement parts here).
4- $1000 of sample libs
I doubt we are over 5k with all this. However, there's still a cost for not having all in a single case. Time to ask for a Receptor keyboard
Anyways, I doubt many hardware fans will see the OASYS as a huge step ahead of the K2600. Too bad it sounds awesome.

For that kind of $ why not just get an OpenLabs NeKo?

When I got my Yamaha EX5, I and others bitched it's 'workstation features' were sadly lacking - compared to a SY99. Sure, it's got VL, AN, FDSP, Sampling... But it hardly lets you compose 2 notes without getting a 'DSP Resource Full' message.
Yamaha said 'well, we had to keep the price down'. If they did wonders with the features on a SY99, wouldn't it be cheaper if you already got the blueprints and component parts are cheaper these days?.... Anyhoo - long story short, they come out with the Motif8 and all. About $7-$9000 for a 'fully loaded' workstation.
If the EX5 was a little better in 'sequencer abilty' than the SY99 - I may not have bought a computer when I did. So in a way, I'm glad the EX5 was a bit 'lacking' - because with it for $3000, a lappy for $2000, and a bunch of software for $1000 - I'm WAAAAAAAAY ahead of the game with $2000 spare to boot!
Neko I think is a brillant concept - for a touring musician.

I'm sure Top of the Pops will buy one to loan out to visiting Eurotrance bands that want something good-looking to stand behind and mime to.any idea about how many of these they will sell a year or in the production run?

I simply cannot see how this will replace a laptop with a controller Keyboard and your favourite plugins and sequencer
That set-up is going to be cheaper, easier to replace if something goes wrong, and fully user-configurable

If you want a DEMO of a Fairlight, listen to Peter Gabriel´s IV (Security) album. Really Incredible.
I don´t know the real potential of KARMA, but if a demo of a $8000 Machine consists of a guy (really talented) dancing and waving to a sequence and playing (sometimes good, sometimes very common) solos over it and tweaking knobs, well...
It´s evident I will never buy it, and I will never CAN.
Cheers

here's my new microtonal ep model.. friend hooked me up with a neck-broke guitar for the pickup (says 'japan' upside down in the middle) different tone with chop stick, metal, plucked.

wood was pallets and rake was thrown out at a h/w store i worked at and i found the nail in the yard. someone else paid for the popsicles.

guess i'm not helping the concept much with a shitty recording, but f**k me. sounds significantly different with striker.

The BEST demo of Fairlights in action by a true master is any Yello album from 'You Gotta Say Yes To Another Excess' on up. Boris Blank was pure genious using his.Guglielmino wrote:If you want a DEMO of a Fairlight, listen to Peter Gabriel´s IV (Security) album. Really Incredible.
