Guys,

Can anyone advise me on how to get back into my DAW?

I had been attempting to connect a DVD to the workstation so I could upgrade Battery2, something I have done before from time to time. The DAW wouldn't boot up with the DVD attatched and still won't boot after reconnecting the original CD.

It keeps giving message:

Reboot and Select proper Boot Device
or Insert Boot Media inselected Boot Device and press a key

I have been into bios set up but nothing jumped out at me, not that I'm an expert, and haven't made any changes in there.

I have also use XP Home cd to try and boot from but takes me to a set up page. Decided to repair but then got asked for administrator password which I don't know.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have updates I wanna play with!!! :(

Sounds like for some reason it can't see your hard drive to boot from. Could be several things:

Loose IDE cable - could easily have happened whilst fitting DVD

Incorrect master / slave settings - if, for example, you've connected the DVD to the same IDE channel as your hard drive, and the DVD drive is set to be a master too, you'll have a conflict

BIOS Settings - you need to check that your hard drive is recognised, and that it's in the list of boot devices

Thanks.

I've checked leads are secure. DVD was connected using the cable from the CDRW, that's how I've done it before.

Bios seems to recognise the drives, it lists

Primary Master 1st HD
Primary Slave CDRW
Secondary Master 2nd HD

Boot priority

Primary Master
Floppy
CDRW

All 3 off these are in [these] which this text a the side suggests means disabled? If so how do I enable?

Cheers

hardly an expert beyond 'dealing with it,' but perhaps if you boot from floppy, when windows loads there might be some error message that pops up and gives a hint?? :p can't hurt to try??? :p (don't quote me there)

if you setup windows yourself.. just hit enter at that admin password box and see if it lets you through..

other than that.. unplug everything but the boot hard drive and see if it still gives you an error..

also if you havent.. check the connection from the cable to the motherboard too.. perhaps even pull out all the cables and reconnect.

when you get that error.. just do the 3 finger salute.. "control alternate delete' together and reboot the machine that way.. see if it boots up like this..

I think speccyteccy may be on to something though.. check your jumper settings on the back of the devices.. you probably have something combobulated there.. obviously you want one slave drive and one master drive on a particular cable.. master should be connected to the interface on the very end of the cable.. slave of course on the interface in the middle of the cable..

at least this is the way it is with cable select using 80-conductor cables. (what you want) Some of the older 40's had it backwards.. and the very old ones dont even support CS.. at least from what I've read.

best bet is to make sure you're using 80 conductor cables if you want to do the CS thing.. but I'd personally just set them manually to slave or master settings instead and just use the cables you have..

though before you go changing settings.. like i mentioned before.. I'd disconnect all drives but the bootup harddrive and see if it works.. it should.. especially if you have this drive actually set to master.

Thanks for all the inof guys, a little bit too tech for me though. I'm a bit wary of unplugging the leads, not sure I'd get them back in the same places.

I only unplugged the CD leads, everything else is as it was when it worked last night. All other cables seem secure. Haven't got a clue what Jumpers are but haven't touched anything else.

The BIOS reads both drives ok, gives me model numbers and sizes etc...

Tried using floppy only for boot, same with boot HD (set as master) only as well. I always takes me to the same black screen message, as does Ctrl+Alt+Del.

Set up was by company I bought DAW from, missed their hotline today and have emailed but will probably have to wait till Monday. :x

If I reinstall XP will my program files stay intact? I will loose all the DAW specific settings though won't I?

It sounds like youve dislodged the cable connecting to your hdd.I think you should disconnect and reconnect the cables. Just because they look ok, it dosnt mean they are.

I done all the leads, some 3/4 times. I can't think it is this though because BIOS has always read both drive details which surely means the cables are ok. If there was a problems it would only pick 1 (or none) up?

Seems that it has forgot that the boot up section is on the pirmary drive? (Talking drivel here as I know nothing that technical)

Ctl+Alt+Del just takes me back to same black screen with message ‘Reboot and Select proper Boot Device…….’

No, no disk in floppy. Tried with one in to see if brought anything up. Nothing

I had the very same problem at the end of a long and painful troubleshooting. I did almost the same thing, ie unplugged a dvdrom drive in order to plug a hard disk drive (ide). I immediately got a freeze at agp440.sys and windows refused to start (blue screen of death). I finally fixed it, but at the end I got the same message as the original poster. The solution that worked for me was to unplug every drive but my boot drive, double check jumpers and ide cables (i mean unplug and plug again, not just visual check), make sure that in biuos the proper drive was enabled (although in parentheses) and other drives disabled, and then it booted normally. After that i reconnected the rest of my drives, and for the last 10 days everything is running smoothly again.

I had a boot problem once when I forgot to remove a USB memory pen from a USB slot which was bootable (had that drive contained the relevant files). It just wouldn't boot and caused some grey hairs before I finally realised that I had that pen still connected.

Thanks. Tried that and still nothing! Rang shop and they think boot sector is kacked! Going to try and repair windows. If no joy, ringing back before trying full install. :x
