Thanks for all your advice above guys.

Repairing Windows did sweet FA (took I while to get that point!), the tech guys were a bit stumped. Was meant to ring back in the morning but have too much on so took things into my own hands. It was looking like a full install so what did I have to lose? :?

After hours of try various DOS tip/tricks from the net I complete the steps outlined Here

And I managed to get back to my set up, then use system restore to go back to last Wed. Great, really cooking on gas now!! :D

Everything's there, shortcuts, mt docs etc.. so I decided to change display settings to my old 1280x1024. Kaboom, black screen with a white box slowly bouncing around!!! Reboot, XP screen comes on then kicks back into same screen. Can't get to Windows to change back. Have tried booting up with video card install CD in, nothing.

Patience is wearing thin now!! :x

Boot into safe mode on startup and see if u can revert back there. Press and hold F8 key on startup.

When u say "black screen with white bouncing box" do u mean the monitor cant handle the refresh rate? If so jsut change the refresh rate in safe mode in display settup.

Hope this helps/works.

My Safe Mode doesn't work like that for some reason!?! F8 just brings up a box asking what I want to boot from, no safe options?!!

Screen is plain black with a white spaure slowly moving round the screen like a screen saver. :tantrum:

ah right, k. Well def sounds like a refresh rate problem, your restore of the system probably set the monitor rate too high.

I'm pretty sure u can change this from safe mode but if ya dont know how to get into it i have no idea.

Did your pc come with any usefull boot disks/restore cd's etc?

Have you tried pressing F8 at different times of the boot proccess? And what menu options does it display, arg tis so anoying when companies block out restore options so you have to ring thier "helpline" etc.

Now that is a new one to me. I've NEVER heard or seen that happen. What could possibly cause that, short of a violent earthquake?

oh, also, I thought I might tell you a little secret about the f8 thingy. If you see a boot selection screen after pressing f8, this is part of your bios options, I have the same thing on my computer. Just select the device and begin holding down f8 immediatly. You should see the windows boot screen come up after that with options for safe mode, etc.

Good luck!

It's possible that some of your boot sequence files may have gotten corrupted.

You CAN re-install Windows (is it XP?) without losing your files even though you can't boot up your system. You'll need access to another computer with an internet connection so you can download a file that will let you create a set of 6 floppy disks. These will be your setup disks for a "Floppy Boot Install". Once you have those 6 floppy disks, you'll be able to pop in the 1st one and that floppy will boot up your system in DOS and then it'll give you access to your ROM drives. From that point, all you do is just pop in the floppy disks as your system asks for them (by number). Just make sure that you don't choose to do a "clean" install.

I'm not sure which one you need so here's the link for Windows XP Home Edition Setup Disks
And here's the link for Windows XP Professional Setup Disks
Just read the instructions very carefully and make sure you already have your 6 floppy disks formatted and ready to go.

Don't worry, it's a lot more simple than it sounds. I'm just trying to be thorough in explaining all of this to you. Go slow, pay attention and you'll be up and running again soon.

Try using this advice if nothing else seems to work.
Those floppy boot setup disks have saved my ass on several occasions. 'Hope they do the same for you.

Good luck.
