You can try removing the StandAlone preferences in the registry
using regedit at /HKEY_CURRENT_USER/com.uvisoundsource/UVIWorkstation
remove the SA folder.
(Start > Run... > regedit)

If this doesn't work, which soundcard are you using with which API(MME, ASIO) ?

Hope this helps.
Well, I haven't tried the last two updates, but version 1.0.13 didn't freeze when I wanted to open the "audio and midi settings".

Okay, I'm trying the registry modification. What do you mean by "remove the SA folder" ? At the given adress, .../UVIworkstation, there is no folder named SA. Or did I misunderstand something? Should there be such a folder? Should I try reinstalling?

I have an RME Hammerfall DSP soundcard, running on ASIO drivers.

Thanks for your time, Olivier.

I don't remember that much things have changed regarding the StandAlone specific parts since 1.0.13 so removing the preferences should be enough.

Regarding the SA folder, you have to check the left panel after opening the UVIWorkstation folder in the registry

/HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/com.uvisoundsource/UVIWorkstation

(I forgot Software in my last post)

If you don't have one it would means that you have never opened the preferences panel which can still be possible.

You can try removing the following file too
C:\Documents and Settings\Your UserName Here\Application Data\UVIWorkstation\UVIWorkstation_StandAlone.properties

Hm, none of the above work, not deleting the properties file, and nothing else. I've also installed older versions of the uviworkstation, all the way back to 1.0.10, but now all of these older versions freeze when I try and access the settings dialog, and also when I try to exit the software.

But I'm sure it worked at some point last year. Or not? I can't be absolutely sure, but I know I've used the software standalone without problems last year, so what did I do?

Oh dammit, I'll have a new computer in two months and reinstall everything anyway, then we'll see.

Thanks anyway, Olivier. If you have any other idea what it might be, I'd be happy, but it seems system-related.

Very strange.

By default, UVIWorkstation use the first ASIO driver it founds if ASIO is available.
Do you have installed other ASIO drivers like ASIO4ALL or something like that recently ?
New MIDI input (like the novation automap driver for example)?

So far I don't have much other ideas...
Sorry about that.

Hi Olivier,
I want to look into that a bit more, since I just bought MOTU's BPM (which uses basically the same engine, right?), and it behaves the same. It crashes when I try and open the settings.

There's no new ASIO drivers on my machine.
You mentioned new Midi input. The thing is, I have one open USB port, and everything new gets installed on that, like my new webcam, the iLok Pace dongle, my new Korg NanoKey controller, etc. I constantly have to take one out and plug another thing in. Is that a potential problem? No other standalone software behaves like that though, so I doubt that's it.

Is there anything I should try deinstalling and then reinstalling? Do you want to see what processes are open in the Windows task manager? I could send you an image file.

I'm determined to find the cause for the freeze, because I need to use BPM on a project soon, and this problem also applies to the UVI workstation.

They indeed share the StandAlone specific code.

It shouldn't be a problem.

So far I don't have much idea what it could be so in the meantime,
I would suggest you to try with with SaviHost

http://www.hermannseib.com/english/savihost.htm

Which can wrap easily a VST into a StandAlone application.

I remember made some test with it and it worked fine.

I'll get back to you if I think of something.

Thanks, Olivier, will try SaviHost. Yeah, when something comes up, let me know.

Hello Olivier,
it must be something with the ASIO drivers of my soundcard.
I just rebooted my computer, and my soundcard failed to initialize (which happens about once a month), which means the computer sees no ASIO audio device.
And suddenly I can open the "audio and midi settings" dialog in both UVI workstation and BPM!

I'll try to reboot again so that my soundcard works again, and check both apps again. Will report back soon...

Ahh interesting. Thanks for letting me know.
Every issue has an explanation ;)

Well BPM works now and doesn't freeze anymore, but UVI Workstation freezes again when trying to open the settings menu. I don't understand. It worked one time, I chose my ASIO soundcard, no problem, closed the app, everything fine.

Then I tried that a second time, and it froze. What on earth could cause that?

You said here:

that the properties file is in that directory. I checked, and this directory doesn't exist. Well, the Application Data directory is there, but there's no UVIWorkstation directory in there. However, there is a hidden folder called "Anwendungsdaten" (which means Application Data in German), and there I found the UVIWorkstation folder and the properties file.
Is it possible that the software is looking in the wrong folder for this file?

Post

Okay, I've made it work again (!), but I'm curious for how long.

First I deinstalled it, and reinstalled it, but that didn't change anything.

So I deinstalled it again, and then manually checked the whole registry file for any UVI related entries and folders, and deleted them manually (why does there have to be leftovers after deinstallation anyway?).
I rebooted my computer, installed UVI workstation, and it works.

So the problem lied somewhere in those registry entries, I conclude.

Regarding the location of UVIWorkstation_StandAlone.properties, it check in your case the right folder at it uses internal Windows function to have this precise folder.(which handle translation)
It's just that as my Windows version is in English, I've copy/paste my folder name without thinking to the translation issue.

Regarding the registry I can only suppose that you have missed the first time the StandAlone setting issue which the find function has found.

Let me know if you run into another issue.

Thanks,
You were certainly right in your assumption that the problem might lie in the registry. I'm sure though that I didn't miss the SA folder the first time, as I've look exactly where you said it should be, and there was none. When I deleted the UVI related folders yesterday, there were about 4-5 folders and entries all over the registry. Could it not have been one of these other ones that caused the freeze?

Anyway, I'm glad it works now, and if anything else comes up, I'll let you know. It's a cool piece of software, and I'll certainly take a look at those tasty UVI libraries soon.

Cheers,

Viktor

Humm the config might be duplicated by Windows in HKEY_USER and HKEY_CURRENT_USER of the registry, so I guess you have to remove both technically, which may explain your issue.

FWIW we store there the StandAlone audio/midi configuration and favorites folders of the internal UVIWorkstation browser.

You might have found other stuff related to UVIWorkstation but generally those are more Windows stuff regarding which dll has been launched recently and stuff like that.
