Michael, I have great respect for your programming skills. What's your trick to getting a punchy attack out of ACE? I haven't been able to even come close.mcnoone wrote:Well imo, it's not that envelopes are or aren't snappy.Gonga wrote:Huh. You mean the decay is snappy?
imo, ACE has a wimpy attack envelope, as compared to Diva, or especially Zebra, which has the snappiest attack of any VA.The wimpy attack is one of few things I don't like about ACE. It's decay may be snappy, but the attack sure isn't.
There are sound programming techniques that can make envelopes react and sound different (soft or hard, snappy or wimpy) on the attack-decay.
I feel that's more up to the sound designer than the synth.
If I listen to those 3 synths init patch, I can't tell which sounds snappier or whatever. In Zebra, you can do much more to the attack, and that's where it helps most. Individual velocity settings to each envelope parameter is great to have in helping things to sound snappier. ACE has env mods, but less.
I don't really care to compare envelopes, but for me...I just wish Zebra had a (1)Diva(minimoog) filter, and those circuit/filter slop settings.
That would be enough for me.
I'd love to use an mseg modulated on that filter...with that combo, and some good env settings, there would be snapping turtles coming out of it.
Diva versus Ace

Thanks for compliment, but I don't know squat about ACE really.Gonga wrote: Michael, I have great respect for your programming skills. What's your trick to getting a punchy attack out of ACE? I haven't been able to even come close.
I'm really still in the learning phase w/t ACE.
I'd try using those envelope modulation knobs, and assign env2 to the env1 knob, and velocity to the env2 mod knob.
Keep cuttoffs and other filter settings very low, and assign env2 to filter.
Then play with env2 adsr sliders, then the env mod knobs of 1&2.
Something will come.
Guess it's just finding something good to mod the envelopes, and let them be the only thing that opens the filter. Velocity is very useful in this.
Now I'm gonna go play with ACE for a bit, and try things out.

edit:Something else I wanna see if I can do in ACE.
In Zebra I will sometimes turn on PW set somewhere between 25-50.
Then assign a very fast sloping down mseg to the pw mod (increase mseg attack, and velocity) then turn it left, until you start to hear it's attack change to something different.
I wonder if I can assign env2 to the pw in ACE, will I get that same thing.
It does wonders for the attack in Zebra.

Do you ask how to assign that modulation? Below the PW knob is the PWM knob with it's input below it. Assign the envelope to it.mcnoone wrote:![]()

I'm not sure what result you mean that this should have on the attack.

Yeah MC - read the manual!chacka wrote:Do you ask how to assign that modulation? Below the PW knob is the PWM knob with it's input below it. Assign the envelope to it. I'm not sure what result you mean that this should have on the attack.mcnoone wrote:![]()

Yea, I actually need to. If I could just pull myself away from Zebra for long enough, to get to it.Howard wrote:Yeah MC - read the manual!chacka wrote:Do you ask how to assign that modulation? I learn more from just looking at other sound designers patches, and moving knobs/cords around, than the manuals though.
I also like the search function at the U-he forum, where I can see the many interesting topics, and answers to questions, that don't need to be asked again.
Well, see those ideas actually came from checking out some of Howard's patches.Gonga wrote:Thanks Michael, your post is added to my "U-He patching" folder!
So mark them as such.
Definitely try that PW thing out in Zebra though.
Just use an unused envelope assigned to that PW (on) mod knob.
Set the PW up 25 to 50 is good.
The envelope is decay only (25-50) 0-attack 0-sustain.
Now move that knob to the left until you hear it change the attack.
That setting can lead to very good things imo.

There are quite a few good patch libraries out for Zebra, yours is right up there with the best Michael, but I have to say, I think Mr. Scarr is in a league of his own, particularly with regard to U-He synths. His stuff just puts me jaw on the floor.
Back in the day I was considered a good analog knob tweaker. But my abilities (and, happily, needs I guess) are basic by comparison to so many on this forum

Single ACE patch, no automation, mod-wheel, aftertouch, pitch bend or effects except a little verb.
Diva = instant Juno/Moog/Korg goodness.
ACE = that other stuff
for all of it!
thanks for sharing this !!
