Blackhole on multiple tracks, side by side with VintageVerb.

A total of TEN reverb tracks are being used between the two verbs.

Interesting hearing the 2 together:

This is helpful, I was concerned at the overlap in sound between these two reverbs.
They are different in character and seem very compatible sonically.

Thanks for the video, its cool to hear them on the same project.
Sweet presets!
I think a better comparison is Valhalla Shimmer vs. Blackhole.

I'd love to bite on this plug, but really see no need as I have Shimmer. (which is always that price BTW ;))

Hearing it with something I own, and familiar with is helpful for me.
I have a better sense how it stacks up and sonic differences.
Its all useful.

Personally, you cant own too many reverbs IMHO.

Then I buy it, and fail to make it sound brilliant.

This time, I say NO.
Then you can just use my version :)

Thanks Simon - and your sounds from this reverb are really great.

We're living in a era of outstanding software plugins.
Blackhole is a very interesting plugin, and I'd probably buy it if I didn't have Vahalla and Lexicon reverbs already.

Ironically, although there is now a plethora of wonderful and affordable plugins (which we would pinch ourselves about 10 years ago), the amount of high quality across the board now makes buying even outstanding plugins like Blackhole less likely for me!

Cheers.

@ Ghettosynth, some good points mate.
I stopped buying reverbs ages ago as I know that I'm totally covered with 2CAudio/Valhalla stuff and the abuse of all these delay and granulator plugins which make for great spaces and ambiences just as well, but while I refused to buy BH back in 2012, I just got tempted this time round and after using it for a few days I'm actually glad I did.

I have Valhalla Shimmer and tried Blackhole few times. For some reasons, not sure why, Blackhole didn't click for me.
The ONLY thing I loved about it and I think it's cruelly missing in Shimmer is the freeze feature. That's the only thing I can see that is missing in Shimmer, other than that it kicks Blackhole's ass imo.... :)

@Sean: a possible candy to add in an update maybe? :D

"Freeze" in a reverb is usually implemented by turning the reverb feedback gain up to 1.0. So, in ValhallaShimmer, if you turn up the Feedback to 1.0, you will have an infinite reverb.

To be fair, some reverbs are a bit more complex, in that they will stop feeding input to the reverb in freeze mode. If you turn the feedback gain in a reverb to 1.0, and you keep feeding input into the thing, eventually the volume will get high enough to start clipping something somewhere. I'm not sure if Blackhole cuts the input with Freeze or not.

UVI's Spark Verb has a true freeze which cuts the inputs:

Pretty much. I was just browsing some old magazines from about fifteen years ago, things were very different then.

Indeed, really cool tip. With feedback to 1.0 & size to the max 1.0 as well, the reverb tail seems to never end. At least from what I've just tested, after near 5 minutes it is stil going! :hihi:

Thanks Sean

My pleasure! To ensure maximum decay length, set the Color to bright. The linear interpolation in the dark mode will result in the high frequencies fading away after a few minutes. With the bright mode, the sound will probably last a few hours. I haven't tested it for longer than that.

I'm a reverb-whore, so even though I have way too many reverbs already, I still purchased Blackhole last year and absolutely LOVE it! To me it has a unique sound. B2 is still my go-to reverb more times than not, but man it sucks up the CPU juice. :o

i can just confirm, what a huge travel this forum for instance, has made from the time i came in, in 2002

i mean not by the only increase of company forums...
(they where six : Muon software, FXpansion, Camel audio, Big tick, Dash signature and Nusofting, ReFX, i let you imagine...)
...but the level of public discussion of all technical aspects, as well as their esthetic implications and artistic applications ...
( perhaps at a lower degree : although whe have some fantastic contributors with Sean, Urs, Xoxos, Sampleconstruct, among others here and there , it's still IMO a bit biased by the amount of advertising everywhere)
...as changed drastically, it's the least i can say about it

Exactly, B2 is great but you can only use so many instances before you run out of cycles.
Blackhole also sounds different from the comparisons made, it has its own sound and I personally like that big, spacious modulated swim.

The low price is of course interesting, I've seen Blackhole for about $42 (must be 37€). But the questions is of course if it makes sense for ValhallaShimmer users to own also Blackhole.

Some "strategic" thinking came to my mind like estimation of upgrade/crossgrade/bundle offers
if various Eventide plugins are on the shopping list ?

Does anyone know if the latest version of Blackhole still works in Windows XP ?
