Spectral is a fantastic and well qualified synth. And for the price worth adding to an arsenal. But Thorn is just a few dollars more. Not that you can always make a hard comparison. I have both and will continue to use Spectral for a long time. In fact all of Linplug's products are great.

But if I had to choose one... what company is still alive and kicking? Yep.

I have Spectral, do I need Thorn? Spectral is more powerful, but the small issue of Linplug no longer being around may become a problem one day.

Need is a rough word, ha. Go snag the demo and play with it. I love Thorn. It sounds warmer than Spectral to me and just has a richer tone. I imagine there are things each can do that the other cannot.

I posted my short comparison in the Thorn thread, these synths are imho too similar to get both, unless you are a KVRian and buy all the synths anyway.

With Thorn GUI fixed, it becomes a pure taste issue. I'll pick Spectral because I want a complex (soundwise) digital background pad/soundscape synth, for other kinds of sounds Thorn could work better due to it's filters and harsher base sound.

Put limiters on your Spectral and it will save the world from harsh modern sounds.

This whole shitfest here is total bollocks, as per usual. I have the limiter off in Thorn by default, and it sounds tighter and more 'spectral' than Spectral. You don't like "fanbois misleading people", but you keep shovelling the limiter argument as if it's gospel. As the sum of its parts, Spectral is ok, but each of the parts are a bit lacklustre.

I do a lot of orchestration. Some soundtrack and trailer work as well. I love a variety of orchestral libraries...so much so that I have most of them.

As a result, when it comes to synths, I would hardly consider myself a fanboi of anything, if not also for the fact that I own most everything. I would be hard pressed to name a synth that is not in my arsenal. I do not pretend to know what people want nor would I ever impose my opinion in such a way as to make a person make a decision. On the other hand, I will always gladly state what I would do in a given circumstance, especially when asked a specific question.

In this case I was asked if Thorn was "needed". And my answer critical center. Both synths have capabilities the other does not. I even challenged the word "need". My comment on warmth was subjectively listed as a specific to MY ears...not a hard fact.

In my opinion the limiter is not the factor in the sound, though with some presets it DOES add warmth. Adding a limiter to Spectral, as I have done so many other times, including several songs that were made entirely with Spectral for the beta test and demo...does NOT get me to a similar warmth that I get with Thorn. This does NOT make Thorn superior in my eyes. It just makes it warmer.

As far as complexity goes, it will be quite complex to me with the next iteration of Windows if for some reason Spectral no longer works, because I am progressive and always update and upgrade, and it has paid off over the years...yet I will be left hanging as I love some of the sounds in Spectral that I am sure I cannot get with Thorn. But I assure you, that is probably where I will turn, to get the job done, unless DS goes the same way as Linplug. Meanwhile I am happy to use both without the weight of a fanboi tag.
