First of all every one used tape and of 70s and 80ies, so Prince was no exception.
I know very well what consoles Prince used.
If you know about Prince, you know that he didn't care that much about sound or mix quality, a song had ro be recorded and mixed quickly, that was important, the song itself was important, it rarely took him more than 2 takes to record something.
His music would sound pretty much the same whether a Neve, API or whatever console would have been used. He like Sunset Sound's API,cuz he got used to it, he never wrote a book about how wonderful that console made his music sound.

You talk about color like a blue sky on a painting was all of a sudden changed into orange by a console or mastering engineer. Mastering must not even change anything on sound.
First you trash all of these great emulations saying they are not good enough for you, then you bring more bologna to the table.

Prince stacked synths, used a lot of effects processing (drenched in fx like you were complaining about), slowed tape and THEN ran it through consoles. If you still think the sound output should be the same as loading up Gforce Ob-E (which sounds remarkable) I'm not sure why you believe this.

To be frank, why are you so picky when many very successful people use a plethora of software synths to make hit records? If you don't like Oberheim emulations then why not find other synths to make music instead of digging in on this thread? A lot of people on here have tried to help you with your perception. I recall you claiming Avenger is so great but other "supersynths" are terrible to you in comparison. I would take a hard look at your priorities when evaluating instruments and musicianship. I think if you had a conversation with Prince today he would tell you to stop being anal and get better at music with the tools readily available and evolve past supercritical triviality that seems to be an endearing quality on this forum.

ıf you played a real OB8 you would probably get bored with its presets too. Its all about shaping, processing and placing it in the mix.

You've heard Prince records right though? Seems like you have. ;)

You know they're completely DRENCHED in FX right? You hear that?

What's more likely: Prince ALSO drenched the synths in FX and processing like he did everything else? OR every single Oberheim emulation, including those officially endorsed by Oberheim, are not even close?

Post

Wow, some of the ignorance in this thread is mind boggling. I owned synths in the 70s and 80s. Ever hear what they sound like out of the box with no FX?

Now you're just spouting nonsense. I'm out. Good luck finding your Oberheim. Maybe buy the hardware OB-X8. Sounds great to me.

How much is this if you already own OPX Pro 3? I don't see an upgrade price.

I just emailed Peter about it to see what he says. It’s probably free since it’s not a major update.

st not even change anything on sound.
You clearly don't know anything about Prince or consoles

For example the song Purple Rain was recorded live in on August 3, 1983 at the First Avenue Night Club in Minneapolis, using a mobile recording rig brought in to Minneapolis all the way from the Record Plant in NYC

From there the tape and Prince went to Sunset Sound in Los Angeles where he spent two months reworking it, making overdubs, and cutting it down from 11 minutes to 8 minutes

But yeah spending 2 months on a song that was recorded on Minneapolis, with equipment from New York, and then totally reworked in Los Angeles.

Sure sounds like a quick and fast way to record, mix and make a record </sarcasm>

Beyond that if you knew anything about consoles and Prince you would understand that consoles impart color to the sound. Prince knew this fact and it was important to him. So important he had a console custom built and shipped to his Paisley Park Studio on Minneapolis that sounded exactly like the one in Sunset Sound. If he thought they didn't do anything and didn't care why would he spend the time, money, and effort to do that

Tape machines and tape formulations from the 1970s and 1980s also impart color. With the machines there was the preamps and tape heads that would impact sound, and then the tape formulation itself. All of those things would impact the sound, saturation, compression, and frequency responses

And you are right everyone used tape and consoles in the 1970s and 1980s. They gained wide acceptance in the 1950s and continue to be used even today for their sonic character

That's why it's silly to make any claim that any synth sounds or doesn't sound like it did on the records from back in the day as unless you are recording the way they did, with the consoles, outboard, and tape formulations they used many of which are unobtainable today then it can't

With plugins you can get close to that sound when you use good synth plugins, good preamp sims, plugins that emulate the old consoles, and plugins that then emulate the tape machines

Then master that down by running through all of those again

Prince recorded direct to ADAT. Fight me!

I know almost everything about Prince!
Sorry to disappoint you
Prince didn't care about sound, he cared about fast workflow, he left about 8000 tracks in his vaults (about 3000 songs, only Duke Ellington wrote about as much, but let's not forget Prince had lyrics to most sings), so he obviously worked very fast , cuz he was hyper creative.
If you want to know more details about him , there are many Sunset Sound videos, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Andre Cymone, Dr. Susan Rogers, Michael Bland, Miles Davis, Sheila E, Dr. Fink, Sonny T. etc etc etc talking about Prince's work ethic.
Why did he have built the same API console at Paisley Park? Simply cuz he was used to it.
Sign of the times considered one if Prince's best album, awful sound quality, just to Dr. Susan Rogers, but you will find the most beautiful songs on this album (Ballad of Dorothy Parker, If I was your girlfriend, The Cross and I don't no any more beautiful song than Adore - absolut masterpiece). Prince didn't care about sound quality!
When he recorded real drums, they would often record it with one mic only, there was no time to waste on setting up several mics when his creativity couldn't be stopped, one mic only, he didn't care, he also wanted to have the vibe of the first moments on an album, 2nd or 3rd take might not have it any more
It is all about fast workflow, not about sound quality.
If you are used to something, you can work fast.
Let's forget Prince, it's about Oberheim

I only see an upgrade from OPX-II for 35 Euro. I don't see anything there that says upgrade from OPX-Pro 3 to OPX-Pro 3 Programmers Edition.
