I experienced the exact same thing:-/ Im on a workstation Thinkpad, 48GB Ram, Intelcore i7 2.80 ghz and with PAM added to a session but not running preset or anything like that the CPU usage is / would be off the charts. I still havent been working properly with PAM but I uninstalled the `full`version with all samples and presets. Also i had few loud bursts while switching variation that were always reproducable.
For 50$ it would be instant buy, but lacking stability is not worth 150$, even if everything else is really great and outstanding
