these are times of fast change and the odds are high.

Good words to end with!

If anyone needs a quick synposis of this issue, I urge you to watch the movie The Corporation for more info.

The internet was created by the US Military as a communication tool. It was then used by scholastic institutions and eventually made public, as we will all recall, during Clinton's admin.

Huh? I think there's a few of us here were using the Internet before '93. Or do you mean Gore's 'I invented' bollocks?

No, I'm not talking about the whole Al Gore thing - don't want to drudge that up. I think I'm right if I say that the www internet started in the early 90's and busted out publicly by the mid-to-late nineties. If you want to take me to task on accuracy, go ahead, but my point was that the army/gov't made the internet, which I'm certain is correct.

i thought this all started in the 70s.

It's funny; cheap DVD production and the internet could undermine the big media message! the Free Market provided the tools for its own undoing...ironic...

agreed but I think the point being made is that Clinton had as much to do with the internet boom as I had in inventing mustard. I do use alot of mustard....

Yup. Anyone who claims the internet was 'made public during Clinton's admin' is either being ironic (about Gore's claim to have invented it), or is rather misinformed.

More and more companies go to the wall while the profit margin of the huge corporations shrinks in the face of competition from other huge corporations.
indeed, this is looking rather terrifying. What next? Microsoft buy Adobe?
Every day takes figuring out all over again how to f#ckin’ live.

Yuppers. When I started using what's become the Internet, I think it was still called DARPANET (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Network). That was in 1971, IIRC.

So when is MEFFYNET coming about?

hehehe
The WWW is NOT the internet!
The internet is much more than just the WWW!

Post

Well, I used to have an IRC channel, #outerbanks, set in a virtual Croatan. That's about as ambitious as I care to get on a personal level. (I did build a bookselling website with several tens of thousands of pages, but that didn't really count; it wasn't my exclusive personal toy, it was my company's.)

The world wide web aint the same as the internet. And the internet has effectively existed since ARPANET in 1968. I can date my own activity on the 'net to before 1990, and it was certainly 'public' before then.
I would say that the web actually probably got its main 'public' (ie home-user) impetus around '98-'99. Prior to that most employment agencies didnt even have a clue what a website designer was, for example...

If you want to take me to task on accuracy, go ahead, but my point was that the army/gov't made the internet, which I'm certain is correct.

The design/concept was indeed a result of research commissioned by the military, although the first four nodes were based at Universities.

Ah, since you know this, you doubtless recall the incident in which two colleges lost big government grants after denying the military access to their computing centers?

The industry newsletters all carried stories titled "CUTTING OFF THEIR NODES TO SPITE THEIR FEES."
