Reason is a modular synth. It's not a host and it's not a recording tool. If you like to call it something else, go ahead, but don't compare it with things it isn't.
..as always a lot of comments from people who don't have a clue. "I used reason once and I thought it was.." DOES NOT MAKE YOU A f**king EXPERT

From what I see, Bones hates the success of Reason because it has buried Orion. Lets face it, more people like it, and it pisses him off. His problem.
What I find interesting is that he's constantly berating the cost issue. Like he's rubbing two pennies together and coveting his "precious" synthedit VST's. I've downloaded them and I have to say they are about a C-. The invoke no creativity and sound...bland. I have to tweak them way more than I should to get a decent sound and then have to smother them with effects to make them interesting at all.
What's funny is that Reason has been a dominating force and apparently has all these catastrophic limitations. A snare drum is pretty limited, but can't imagine writing a great Break beat without it. Reason is a great piece of kit for the people that like it and it doesn't matter if they own other software or not...it stands on its own.
What's pitiful is that I actually own Orion...I gave it about a month trial, but all in all, a bad choice for me. I went back to Reason and was happy with the "limitations" that haters...well...hate.
Combinator is awesome. I could create new sounds forever. I don't have to keep building a new mediocre "synthedit of the week" to get my rocks off. I can keep the same basic building blocks in Reason and will always be able to make new sounds and sequences. I've heard the stuff Bones puts out and it all sounds like he made it with the same 2 or 3 things, went to sleep, woke up, and did it again...and again...and again.
I've heard so much diverse stuff from Reason which has 2 samplers and 2 synths that its amazing peoople are still ignorant enough to say it all sounds the same.
Just because one might make repetitive stuff that all sounds identical doesn't mean the rest of the world should...or would want to. It really pisses people off to see such a "simple and highly flawed" piece of software be so successful and they just can't be happy about it.
Sad really.
But I guess haters gotta hate or they wouldn't know what to do with themselves. Poor fools.

Well, my Kurzweil 2600 had a built in sequencer. But it didn't host anything either. Lots of things that don't host plugins have a sequencer. I don't understand the point?superddman wrote:

i've heard amazing music made on trackers, so you have a point here..drez wrote:From what I see, Bones hates the success of Reason because it has buried Orion. Lets face it, more people like it, and it pisses him off. His problem.

So you would not qualify Reason as a sequencer?drez wrote:Well, my Kurzweil 2600 had a built in sequencer. But it didn't host anything either. Lots of things that don't host plugins have a sequencer. I don't understand the point?superddman wrote:

No no, I definitely would call it a sequencer. It does do that and, IMHO, it does it extremely well. Quick and effectively for me. I just wouldn't call it VST host. Maybe I didn't understand your anglesuperddman wrote:So you would not qualify Reason as a sequencer?drez wrote:Well, my Kurzweil 2600 had a built in sequencer. But it didn't host anything either. But if people want to get all bent out of shape because it doesn't HOST plugins, then they should identically be mad because neither does the Hardware synths that they paid thousands for. I mean, you can pay a few grand for a synth that is very specialized and its an accepted practice. But if a company chooses the apparently "illogical" business practice of making a closed "software" product that still includes everything you need to put out good music and it only costs a couple hunderd dollars, then they are idiots.
Double standard IMO.

I guess if that's all it was, then there wouldn't be the "pissing contests". But the issue is that expressing "tastes" isn't what has been going on in this thread.

Ok, so I am just comparing sequencing inside of Reason to sequencing inside of lets say Logic. That's all. Not taking into consideration no vst support.drez wrote:No no, I definitely would call it a sequencer. It does do that and, IMHO, it does it extremely well. And from my experience, Reason fell short.

I see what you are saying, and yes, it is NOT as advanced a sequencer as logic is...host or not, it just isn't as feature rich. I'm sure if you are using Logic's sequencing abilities that Reason "doesn't" have or can't do, then you would feel pretty limited. Good point.superddman wrote:

For me, I probably don't use the sequencer to that kind of degree. People say the same thing about Live's sequencer, that its weak. But for me, it does what I need it to and I can either play what I need with my hands or I can take the time to edit it like I need in either program...But I'm sure if I could have those advanced sequencer tools and it was still intuitive to me, then I'd appreciate the features.

Wow...amicable discussion. I wouldn't have thought that would have been possible in this thread. Cheers! My guess is that we just killed the thread
