+1 to that. A choice seems like the best solution to me.Dean Aka Nekro wrote:To be honest I like the option of dongle protection or whatever else as its more of a PITA having half dongled and half other methods of protection. You know give us users/customers a choice where dongles are involved I think is the way forwards
Dongle or no dongle, that's the question!

I finally broke down and got a dongle when I bought Nexus 2. The dongle I absolutely loathe, but I can see where some of you may find it less of a hastle when using multiple computers. Also I would imagine that most dongles never have a problem.
My biggest concern is the relative down-time difference in the event of dongle failure or breakage compared to the down-time necessary to reestablish C/R protected software (and I'm aware of the iLock zdt option, which is fine except it costs money each year...)
But be that as it may, here is a link to an article on dongles (admittedly it's from 2008, but still not a bad piece.)

Oops, sorry, I wasn't wearing my glasses and I though this poll asked "Do you like dolphins?"
How do I un-vote?

I wonder what proportion of the people who voted "No" have ever actually owned a dongle. I would assume that, aside from possibly a few trolls, the people who voted "Yes" all own/use dongles.
Still, I'm surprised that the responses are about 2:1 in opposition of dongles. I probably would've guessed more like 4:1 or greater.

I vote yes, in the hopes of encouraging more devs to transition to dongles, so if I ever release a commercial plugin I can hopefully get more sales by not having a dongle.
As a user.. hmmh.. I wouldn't really care, as long as the hypothetical dongle was class-compliant; I'm not going to install any drivers for such a thing. I might also prefer it to work over old-school MIDI since I'm kinda running low on USB ports (I think I'm using about 9 ports currently, not including things like my mobile phone or camera that I might want to connect occasionally).
Actually here's an idea for dongle companies: make your dongle work as an USB hub. Then it's serving an actually useful purpose too.

Yes. If nothing else thing it should at least daisy chain, to replace the port it's using.mystran wrote: Actually here's an idea for dongle companies: make your dongle work as an USB hub. Then it's serving an actually useful purpose too.

I said no but there's no real way around them if you want some of the software. I was not going to go iLok2 but now that Eventide is doing a deal where it's $11 with a Blackhole purchase, I'll do it.

if it's done right like syncrosoft yes no prob, better than challenge response especially when you reinstall, you have to open so many sites, look up etc.
but ILOK? nooooooooo, crap, sad that people support this crap.

@braj: Yeah hubs can be wacko. I've a decent hub from Adaptec. Not cheap. PC would not POST with it plugged in. No other issue, just that. WTF?
mcnoone: Exactly. If you run out of ports and want tech support, they expect you to unplug other stuff. Computers aren't supported as multipurpose devices ...
