That's a different discussion. For the discussion at hand, the hardware can be hit a lot harder before falling apart than the emulations I've tried (I haven't tried the DCAM yet).kvaca wrote:the question is if we really need to hit it harder, becouse majority of todays audio production suffers from that "loudness war" and to me is totally unacceptable to listen such records with DR 6 or 7...
Are we close to getting plugin compressors that sound like real ones?

Yes, those are different issues.
Eric, have you tried UBK-1? I'm liking it quite a bit along with:
ArtsAcoustic CL Series
McDSP 6030 (versatility and ease of use)
Renaissance Compressor (oldie but goodie)
Softube FET
IK 670
Klanghelm
Need to test further URS Strip Pro, Mix Control Pro, Molot and FG-X.

I mean that it falls apart. With the hardware, you can push it ridiculously hard on a main buss and it just sounds smooth, solid, and glued together. The emulations sound like overcompressed, mashed up messes when pushed to the same degrees. I still love the UAD 4K Buss Compressor and use it in nearly ever mix or master but I need to chain it with a Sonnox Dynamics if I want the full effect of what the hardware can do by itself.Mutant wrote:What is it exactly you mean by that ?

These are all good (well, aside from the Ren Comp) but they can't replace hardware like the UAD 33609 and new 1176's can. These are the only ones I've found that can be direct replacements for hardware.Ah Xoc Kin wrote:Yes, those are different issues.

It's better than the original UAD 1176, I'm referring to the three brand new 1176's that UA just released. They're incredible.ttoz wrote:Softube FET is pretty amazing IMO though.. it's my very favorite 1176 emu yes even above the UAD

The example I posted earlier, does that also 'fall apart'?Uncle E wrote:I mean that it falls apart. Your example doesn't exhibit the kind of gain reduction I'm referring to. Try the same thing with a faster attack, a faster release, 2:1 ratio, and 8-10dB GR.himalaya wrote:The example I posted earlier, does that also 'fall apart'?

There are software compressors that don't fall apart, just not the SSL emulations.Mutant wrote:If you used software - it is "fall apart", if you used hardware - it is "you didn't set it up properly"

Well, it's emulating whatever Shy has posted, which was supposed to be a 'stress' level test.Uncle E wrote:Your example doesn't exhibit the kind of gain reduction I'm referring to. There are some good words for the Vertigo. A mastering guy here in Germany (Andreas Balaskas from Masterlab) is using the hardware and compared it to the software. Very close. There is a difference but not very big.
I think some companies are very close with this emulation stuff. I only wait that Urs releases some stuff, would be interesting to see a 1176/LA2A etc made bei U-He
