No better way to answer your own question than personal hands-on side-by-side comparison. Setup a small A-B-C comparison between the two you mention and a trial of the MF-102S. The differences in workflow and sound will be easily apparent, and you'll learn more about how ring modulation sounds on different sources. I did.

Use an existing project where you are already have a ringmod ... or use some non-obvious sources. The linked discussion was quite illuminating, and throwing a helicopter, rain, clacking of a train (or just percussive clacking) at the ring mods tests their capabilities. https://forum.moogmusic.com/viewtopic.php?t=6739

The trial I had long ago expired, so I can't test it again. Thanks for the link.

How'd it go last trial? I will say MF-102S is a drop dead simple interface. Another advantage is that there are a lot of demos and tutorials for the hardware that can be easily extrapolated to the plugin. Between Echobode and Freak and your stock ringmod you probably have the bases covered, unless ring modulation is somewhere you want to go deep, or you plan to buy more moogerfooger plugins and use the CV functionality between the units.

IIRC, it didn't sound much different or better than Echobode. However, I rushed the trial and didn't take advantage of the 30 days.

At that "below no-brainer" price offer, I got the RingMod but I thought the GUI would be a little bigger.
Does it automatically scale up for 4K users or you're SOL above 1080p?
Not sure I'll buy more of those if they don't get an update for GUI resizing.

Post

My biggest complaint is the lack of resizable UI. Not aware of automatic scaling.

yeah it is my only issue with them, very silly in 2023

According to Sweetwater, the Ring Mod sale ends on September 6

Did some fiddling with Echobode and MF-102S side by side. The documentation is no place to start with Echobode as a ring mod ... "r.m." on the Sideband knob clear enough after I found it, though undocumented. Drilling down into the presets helped. I would put Echobode in some other category than pure ring modulator, same as I wouldn't call Audiothing Frostbite a ring modulator, although it has a good one.

With the MF, the comparative effortlessness of dialing in interesting variations on a sound within the limited scope of ring modulation is what sold me on it. Trying to match in Echobode requires a lot more effort, but then the MF can't do even half of what it can do. If you want to go deep into ring modulation, to me the MF-102S is the better choice.

Huh, they just ported the effects to iOS. $35 for an intro price. Interesting.

Hi there!
Is there a way to completely disable all overdrive or saturation effects on the Moogerfooger phaser plugin?
An EHX small stone thread just made me realize why I registered after having been a lurker, but got sidetracked :D
Cheers

Saturation/overdrive is an integral part of the Moogerfoogers and there's no way (that I know of) to disable it; you may try keeping the input low and then compensate at the output if you want to keep them in the "clean" zone, but you're not going to get a "completely clean" sound anyway. Maybe you could also use some compression before the effects, in order to operate them in the "clean zone" as much as possible.

By the way, the Moogerfooger plugins are "cleaner" than the hardware.
free multisamples (last upd: 22th May 2021).

Thanks for confirming. It was the first experience ever where lowering the volume didn't completely diminish the saturation/overdrive effect. Actually beginning to think that the clean zone is somewhere in between, probably could do some DC offset experiments, but that could be far-fetched idea. Probably should have understood that this is a key feature before choosing the plugin. Time to move on...

I've just bought these because of the sound but f**k me no resize how lame... Even their manual has nicely zoomed in pictures with good resolution lol the plugins in their manual look better than in the DAW

They literally announced a few hours ago a 1.2 version.
No more ilok and resizable.
