The internal disk is EIDE and I don't think it uses virtual memory on disk...
Anyway, adding an external drive is pointless to me. Adding more devices, more cables, spending more money... for what? If you spend 350 Euros you get an Atom based EEE PC which is 4x faster than the V-Machine. Add 150 euros for Forte and you're there.
I love the idea of the V-Machine being a chamaleontic sound module with no need for a screen, but if you have to add stuff to get it working properly, you'd better get a PC.
Just my 2 cents.

I totally agree with UnclekillerZioKiller wrote: Anyway, adding an external drive is pointless to me. Adding more devices, more cables, spending more money... for what? I have been really disappointed reading this thread since December. This reminds me of the worst customer support in the world. CME.
I am a sad owner of a CME UF7 keyboard. Google UF7 USB driver and you can see the direction V-Machine is going.
I am going to buy the V-machine X0 series when it is ready and running, but I will NEVER be fooled again with the promises of updates and upgrades like SM-PRO is making.
I feel really bad for all you pioneers who have had to pay for the work which you thought had been done but you'll have to pay for again when the final product ships.
Sadly it seems that this company might go over before completing even the 1.0 stage of software.
It is really a shame, but what on earth are the developers thinking when they use months of time on Mac-compatibility before fixing the firmware of the unit to even save settings on closing?
Maybe next year. Hopefully.

I'm playing my V-Machine with a CME UF7
But I've to admit the situation is totally different; CME support simply doesn't reply (also if I consider UF7 a great master), if you send a ticket to SMPROAUDIO they reply very fast.
Now we have only too see if the requested upgrade will be so fast too.

well, mac support was quite an important point - while pc users at least could load (some) of their own plugins mac users could do nothing than use the internal presets! so thanks to sm-pro to release that finally after a long period of waiting
I'm curious if a cpu upgrade will be possible without exchanging the board or even the whole hardware (= buy a new v-machine)? as already mentioned if the built in 1ghz cpu indeed would have equal or better (as promised) performance as a comparable windows cpu with good asio drivers it was no problem, but obviously it simply doesn't yet - maybe there's still some potential to improve performance with software updates (without exchanging hardware)?

I'd like to know from other machiners, what kind of bank have u been able to create?
Obviously I'm talking about banks with at least to VST not a bank with just a single instrument.
Also knowing about inserted effects could be useful.
Just a way to understand the actual limit of the machine.
Please post your experience here.

its all about realistic expectations isnt it?
it actually seems to be doing a little more than id anticipated by what ive read. i didnt think b4 would work out as well as it seems to for instance.
i give extra credit to the first of everything and i subtract it from the thing that comes last that has all the bugs worked out benefiting from everything that came earlier.
for me its about wivi, if they can get that on it then ill probably spring for it and an ewi usb for my gf.

That is what I did. I bought the MSI wind and a KB 37 keyboard/soundcard to reahearse with my jazz band. (I use a novation too on another usb-port). So you have to add an external soundcard to the cost. The KB 37 cost almost as much as the Wind. The MSI wind weight is 1.2 kilos.ZioKiller wrote:The internal disk is EIDE and I don't think it uses virtual memory on disk...

B4II
DVS Guitar
GTG NK1001
Samplelord with 3 soundfonts
they are in the same preset, different midi channels and it reaches 90% cpu and plays without any click
another bank with:
B4II
2 x Minimogue
GTG NK1001
they are in the same preset, different midi channels and it reaches 60% cpu and plays without any click
BUT the thing is that it isn't easy to find the combination of vst's that doesn't overpower the cpu and fulfills your wishes. So I ended sampling the vst's in the first example (bank) and loading the samples in a sampler... mediocre solution....
More power would be great at any time!!!

Which soundfonts did u use???
So far I've tried a bank with VB3 and truepianos (different midi channels), but its not playable, cuz when u play the piano u get cpu overload and glitch almost immediatly!!!
The same result with a bank with Sample Tank Piano and VB3 in two different midi channels but in this case seems to be more difficult to get distorsion; note that the problem is always affecting just the piano if play chords repeatedly with sustain (I do this cuz I wanna be sure to have no problem during a live situation).
In both banks VB3 works perfectly with no click.
I'm gonna try the same test with NI B4II.
Until now I've not been brave enough to try two VST in the same midi channel

I have a 60Gb external drive that I want to use.
Do I have to partition it to 2 x 32Gb for FAT32 or does the V-machine support FAT32 partitions larger than 32b?
Also, if I format 2 x 32Gb, how do I set up the drive letters in the vfxinfo.txt file? (Is the first partition p: ??? and the next q: ???)
/Tommy

True!I tested an very old HP Vectra Pentium III 500 Mhz with windows XP and 512Mb and forte and it was muchfaster. I posted this info on forum.
The P8 preset Final Countdown: 6 notes polyphony, on the Vmachine 1 or 2 at the most! This was THE reason to send it back. The promise that you can compare it with a 2Ghz?
I'm running VISTA on a new sony vaio running forte 2, the free ProteusX (also have emulatorX2 to create sounds), alchemy, and wusikstation and some free stuff. Rock solid and SUPER fast to setup songs with snapshots.
Price? 1000 Euro incl. a cheap Behringer USB sound card (with better quality as the Vmachine), 4 Gb RAM Dual Core P8400... I can switch between the banks with a pedal or you can use a frontier tranzport.

Yes!!!MatthewSkinner wrote:Truepianos runs perfectly (yes even with sustain) on my setup with a 7200rpm external 2.5" HDD. Using a flash memory stick does not give anywhere near the same performance, as most flash can not sustain the same speed as a 7200rpm drive. If you use a 2.5" latop drive in a usb2 enclosure then you do not need a power point for the hard drive as the drive can be powered from the usb connection, these drives are physically smaller than the vmachine.
The drive must be formatted as FAT32 for best performance.
By using a large and fast external HDD the cpu load comes down on some plugins as the plugin is no longer having to wait for files.
It CHOKES again!!!!
Today I got the 7200rpm external 2.5" HDD (other 130 bucks
Now or I'm a genius, capable to do things that other man cant do (but I dont think so) or you're not really stressing the truepianos to test it.
Please post a video in which u play piano just to understand your test, I will post mine as soon as possible to demonstrate that it does CHOKE!!!
Obviously if u play smooth and be very careful doesn't give problem, but do u really think that you can play live with these feelings?
...........final solution:
Is anybody intersted in buying a V-Machine upgraded to 1gb of ram?
Price is 400 €, I'll pay also the shipping costs.
Please feel free to send me a pm.
Thanks
