Hehe, a pleasure Aaron. Here is another hybrid instrument (guitar meets koto), two instances of Hive:

Thanks for sharing! I wouldn't have guessed that was Hive. Thanks for the FluteCelloAx also.tedlogan wrote:Hehe, a pleasure Aaron. Here is another hybrid instrument (guitar meets koto), two instances of Hive:

Hi,
Any idea when the official version (not beta) of HIVE will be released ?
I'm guessing it will have more features, and might cost a bit more.
Thanks,
Muziksculp

We're going to post a new build this week. It'll work with the beta serial till end of March.bjporter wrote:Hi Urs and Friends:
Just wondering exactly/precisely when the beta serial ends? (it says 'valid till Jan 31st ). One Synth Challenge Hive edition officially ends on 4AM EST, 1st of February, and a lot of people submit their song near the deadline, so I'm wondering when to send out a reminder before hand to make sure they don't get stuck.
Thanks

Do you think this will improve CPU use in FL Studio 11.1.1 (32-bit) on Windows 7 (64-bit OS, old faithful 2-core machinery with 4 gigabytes of ram) for me? It's crazy high, almost ten times higher than a Zebra 2 patch that has 2 oscs set to 11 with detuning and two filters in order to be somewhat comparable(!).Urs wrote:We're going to post a new build this week.

I have a 2 core intel mac with 4gb ram, and the Hive uses less than most other synths.V-GER wrote:Do you think this will improve CPU use in FL Studio 11.1.1 (32-bit) on Windows 7 (64-bit OS, old faithful 2-core machinery with 4 gigabytes of ram) for me? Even with both oscillators set to 16 voices, and 16 poly, on a long release pad, it doesn't go past 60%.
I have 32bit mac os though...and I'm using Live.

Well, I guess that rules out 2 cores being too little for it, which I for a little while feared.. Seems to be FL Studio not playing well with it for some reason, reasonable CPU use in Reaper 4.76. EDIT: I so seldom use Reaper for enything other than mixing wavs from FL Studio I've practically forgotten how to set it up for much else so it took a while to get it tested there...mcnoone wrote:I have a 2 core intel mac with 4gb ram, and the Hive uses less than most other synths.V-GER wrote:Do you think this will improve CPU use in FL Studio 11.1.1 (32-bit) on Windows 7 (64-bit OS, old faithful 2-core machinery with 4 gigabytes of ram) for me? @ u-he team: Is it enough that I've posted about this here or should I send you guys an e-mail in case you need any additional info etc? You asked not to get any bugreports on e-mail so I didn't want to bother you hard working good folks, but you're perhaps done with your "time off" now?

Project status: Good God, what have I done.dumbledog wrote: Thanks for the support! I have a long weekend just starting up which I'm hoping to more or less dedicate to this. Spent tonight cleaning up some of the code and starting to look at how I'm going to output the actual h2p. Last night I started looking into what chorus settings to use in Hive and totally got lost into reading the last few Synth Secrets articles on the subject. Fun times.
By way of example, I've attached a conversion of the factory "56 Reed 2" patch which was mostly done using the script. I did have to tweak the filter decay and sustain more than I would have liked to... need to tweak them parameters a bit more I guess. I think it comes relatively close, and honestly when I hard pan the two synths I have trouble telling the difference except maybe in the release.
Still to do: bottom row, relative volume of the oscillators, reverse engineering the arpeggio, maybe some basic aftertouch support and of course patch export.
Writing the patch export was relatively easy and I took the opportunity to clean up some code in the meantime. Feeling good, I figured I'd convert some test patches since the cutoffs and envelope were done.
Nope! Not even close.
So instead of touching up over the weekend I went back and took a good long look at cutoff, envelope amount and how the sustain effects the filter. Hive (at least on Normal) is an extremely precise synth in these regards -- the cutoff dial corresponds to musical frequency, one semitone per step (even if the 30 to 150 scale never made any sense to me and is different across u-he synths). Sustain adds to the cutoff frequency in semitones when the mod envelope is set to 100, and the mod envelope is such that at 50% you'll need 2 sustain notches to achieve the same effect. Maybe not my first guess on how it all works, but there's a method there, and it's perfectly consistent.
U-NO-LX... isn't. And that's understandable, given that he's working on his reference hardware synth where sliders have different play at the edges and all that. And dealing with this is basically where the weekend went, doing tests, making about 25 spreadsheets in Excel, doing regressions and frowning at residual plots and all that jazz. I have an interview for a job promotion this week and I think I'll be bringing this in.
As it stands, I can absolutely nail the freq of patches using cutoff, sustain and envelope. Cutoff I'm especially proud of -- the LPF slider seems to combine exponential and polynomial functions and my recreation is dead on, generally within a Hertz.
Unfortunately it all goes to crap when I add motion to the filter, because I don't have a great grasp of how the mod envelope actually affects cutoff over time. I think I have an inkling now though and maybe have a way to measure it using FreqAnalyst's peak graphs but it's a work day so won't be done until tonight.
