I think SoFo always had that breakpoint comp thingy, so far as I can recall. I never used it much. This Cake comp is *far* more flexible, plus it has the advantage of providing three different detection gain elements and an option for a soft knee transfer response.

Once you understood the concept of working with breakpoints to design your transfer curve, you could get tones impossible to achieve with more conventional compressor topologies. In fact, you can get some subtly beautiful dynamic responses out of a good breakpoint design when it is skillfully used. It is somewhat surprising that more developers have not expanded on the breakpoint principle, only that I could see where some users might shrink from the relative complexity.

Actually, in terms of sound, I have always felt this soft compressor was really quite underestimated.

remember neodymium? It had a similar topology. Unfortunate with the whole Roger Nichols debacle.

Also, I have a faint memory something called FA-soft (or similar) used to sell a decent breakpoint based compressor.

Then there's that Magalov audio compressor (available free from KVR developer challenge downloads), which seems to handle breakpoints well.

Factory presets: CompressUp2 PunchUp2 and Vintage5

just a question... would it be anyhow possible that you would convert these to hi-quality .mp3 or .ogg instead of larger .wav files? Because they would take less space, bandwith and they would have little to no noticeable difference in soundquality? Just a suggestion...
Basic EQ tip: highpass all that don't hit subs, usually all but bass and kick

Post

I'd rather keep as many as possible in .wav format as mp3 or .ogg do mess with the transients a bit. However, if there is some specific big files you think eat too much bandwith and would like in mp3 then just send me a pm and I'll see what I can do.

Wow. Does that ever bring back memories! You know, I've always thought a lot of those CWPA plugins were better than they looked; loved the chorus, TapeSim and AmpSim - even that reverb! Just about the only PC game in town back in the 90's too!

Jeez...it's even got sidechaining! :o Maybe it's time to take a look at CWPA 9!

can we get a compressor with a hold feature or a load hold mode

use Kjarhus Audio GAG1 in ducking mode. It's actually an *excellent* compressor as such, and also features the hold mode you ask

Post

thanks Kingston will take a look

Post

gag1 is a gate Kingston! what im looking for is a compressor with the ability to capture and hold the load of the compression so that when the compressor kicks in with say a vocal you avoid that pop you get. the way i do it now is side chain the vocal track and move the side chain track back so that the compressor kicks in early. so that pop is gone! extra work im want to save time! but for now this works.

I know that! That's why I said to use it in ducking mode, which makes it a perfectly capable compressor with a hold feature. You just have to think ratio/threshold/mix in a new way with this mode.

Rest assured it sounds awesome when you learn it.

f**k it i just did a ride and i like how that sounds so the compressor is gone. thanks Kingston for your help and time

Also, Bluecat Dynamics has a hold part in it's detector "envelope". It's very useful.
