I still think Crystal is pretty spectacular (even though it's not really my thing).

Alphakanal's great 'Automat' is a good wtf-candidate too!

I cannot believe that TAL-NoiseMaker is free. To me it sounds as good or better than many paid synths from the first minute you start to play. The presets are amazing, useful, warm, etc. etc. etc. It is tied for the easiest synth to understand and program. GREAT synth to show off to those who say they hate software synths or people trying to learn synthesis.

The interface fools you into thinking it's either going to make blippy toy sounds or that it was amateur because it is SO simple. If you haven't tried it, now's your chance, especially all you Mac users out there who complain about the lack of free synths for the Mac! :-)

Here is the "ONE" synth I can't believe is free :-0

Ugo Rez. Seriously. If you either haven't tried it yet or if you heard it way back when it first came out then forgot about it, you owe it to yourself to get it and just listen. Possibly the best sounding filter I've heard in a software synth. Pure ear candy.

"Rez is a virtual analog monosynth, with a highly resonant low pass filter, that is capable of a wide range of sounds, from funky squishes, beastly basses and screaming leads, to tight arpeggiations, atmospheres, bells, and interesting effects.

Specs:
Virtual analog
Phrase arpeggiator
Sub oscillator
Detune (modulateable via aftertouch)
Highly resonant low pass filter
Pulse width modulation
Overdrive
Dual Delay
Phaser (with velocity modulation)
3 LFOs
Host BPM Sync
MIDI CC control over most presets
256 presets

Ok, back the truck up... am I the only one in this whole forums that think ZynAddSubFx is meh?? Someone mind explaining what I seem to be missing? SQ8L... sex in digital, very nice sounding ( and I'm not from he " oh, wow, analog sounding" school of thought. I just think it sounds nice, in its own right).

The range is only matched by Synth1 imo and most category sounds are amazing, but its strings and pads are something else, you must have missed those.

Then it has 16 midi channels so you can layer some serious sounds, and the editing capabilities is extensive.

Not bad on the old CPU either, has midi learn and even scale tuning.

Like the synth, the dev made his PAD synth technology open source and is now in use in DiscoDSP's Discovery2.

Add to that a great library of presets and I can't really believe this synth is free.

Speaking of presets, did you get them working? If you're using the VST version they must be put in one of the paths set in options, as those can only be customized in the standalone version.

PS. be careful not to switch presets too fast or when a sound is playing as that can cause crash, a known bug.

Hi V'ger,

Ye, I was using the VST version, and I actually downloaded and collated all the banks on KVR's database. I was able to load all the presets, and ye, they sound ok... amazing, not to me... maybe it IS just me then

PS: Had no crashes ;) so that's a plus I guess. :hihi:

It's just you then.. Nah seriously, each with different tastes, but if you're into clean digital sound like SQ8L maybe want to give Krakli's RMXL a try, one of my favs freebies atm. In fact one of the fav VSTi's period I should say as I seem to be playing as much with that and its big brother RMP2 (donationware) as any other atm.

In other words, RMXL is another I can't believe is free. Lots of nice overtones and 'alive' sounds as with much of Ian's stuff. Definitely unusual, yet still usable sounds.
