First we lusted after old hardware synths.
Now we lust after old software synths.

Those old softsynths have algorithms no one uses any more so they have a special sound that modern softsynths don't have, lol.

In addition to the sound, another main issue to users wanting 70's synth is their hands on experience, a lot easier to tweak than keyhole surgery of the early digital synths and well into the 90'sAnalogGuy1 wrote:First we lusted after old hardware synths.

So a reason for wanting older soft synths, can be that they are easier to get to grips with and carry less bloat than newer soft synths?

i've never been happier with WinXPsp3 running EnergyXT2 that is only 1.03mb in size requires no installation and opens in a heartbeat.
and all my old tiny but great sounding free and some commercial self contained installationless VSTi's
no contact, alchemy, omni, no sample library bloat no fuss.
i guess being an old guy that grew up listening to 80's music has made me prefer the sound
of old analogs and romplers with no interest in the complicated daws and synths out now.
i know people probably get sick of seeing my posts on the matter and i've been trying to tone it down.
so yeah, carry on making music you like in whatever way works for you.

For me it's not an issue of sentimentality. it's an issue of sound. for example, I used a Wavestation and Poly-6 a lot back in the 80s and 90s. now that I work with software tools, I want those same sounds and sound design interface and that's why I use the Korg collection. The mini moog is my main lead synth. I have one. I've had 3 at one point. so in software I use the Arturia Mini. it's just the sounds. I don't consider any particular synth sound to be "better" in the context of its sound only. Sound is sound. Even the technical things we generally consider to be "bad sound" are modelled in software and people use them to good effect (eg.distortion, data errors, phase issues, etc). so really, there is no "bad sound" because you need a context (eg. "bad sound because it's not the sound I want"). and so the idea of why bother with the Korg collection because are there are better moderns soft synths out there is a moot point to me, unless I can find a better version of those provided by Korg that actually sound better, meaning, more like the real thing. however in terms of sound, my feeling is the Korg collection is pretty damn good. the rest of the aspects of them however are i dire need of updating, namely the UI.
Imagine if they did a similar UI treatment as U-He does. that would be fantastic to have them updated to that level of UI quality.

You could do it in Synthedit as VSTnix808 wrote:It could be wrapped as .exe by MAX/msp,
if the relevant parameter are automatable-
not as VST though sorry
edit: If anyone can be bothered- a functional UI and wrap could be done in PureData,
but I think UI is really basic

Is it asking too much for a 64bit wrap?

Problem with wrapping it is you still need to use the original interface for the MS20 cabling. Plus very few of the params in Wavestation and M1 are even automatable. That being said I have wrapped what I can in NI Kore 2 with hardware mappings and imported presets, so most of the time I don't need to open the original GUIs.

Depends, i guess. If you need the KORG sound, there's hardly an alternative in software. If you compare them to sound demos of the real deal though... hm.... the MS-20 is far from it, IMO. Neither sounds as rich and fat as the hardware, nor does it have the creaminess of the filter. Rather sounds thin and harsh. To each his own.

I think they're still worth it, in fact, maybe best bang for your buck bundle available. And as far as I know, the Wavestation in particular really doesn't have an alternative. The others probably have more modern equivalents, but I think this one is pretty unique.
But yeah, the tiny UIs are pretty bad.
