well, I'm a little conflicted at least.

I am a Logic Pro X user, and on that front this is freakin' sweet. the GUI is great, the new additions are awesome. this is basically Alchemy 2. and since I already had LPX... I own the original too, so I can use that wherever I want.

I only really use the mac for music, I have many windows machines, and if you ask me to support one or the other, I probably come down more as a windows guy than a mac guy. that said, butthurt windows users complaining that this is mac only can piss right off. theres plenty (thousands) of examples of windows only software that mac users can't touch, so I dont really have too much sympathy for the few (admittedly great) titles you cant get your mitts on. life is about choices.

and even having said that, I feel that Alchemy is just too good of a synth to be bundled to any DAW. yeah I use LPX, but not exclusively and now I'm gonna want to use the new Alchemy in Live and I can't. I suppose theres no chance, but I would def be in favor of lobbying for a version of Alchemy for sale that can be used in any sequencer even if it costs more than Logic does (as the first Alchemy did)

ShawnG... I wonder if they'll do it?

Apple... making a version of (or allowing someone to make a version of) their own software that works on...

I bet the world would implode if Cakewalk announced next week that Omnisphere would be bundled exclusively to Sonar.

What was the big deal about Alchemy? Legitimate question.

I demo'd it a long time ago and didn't find anything special about it - yeah it could morph through different sounds and it has several methods of synthesis, but there are a good few synths that can do that. I personally didn't like the sound of it and didn't see $250 of value - unpopular opinion but just being honest.

From what I've seen, a lot of patches people like seem to be based around audio clips that are being warped and morphed (not so much the synthesis engine itself). Surely these sounds could be made in something else?

I certainly understand some of the anger here towards Apple - my LPX update is tasking an eternity to download, I'm furious with them too.

legitimate answer..
yes. you're right. it was terrible. no one ever did anything good with it. it wasn't fun to use either. i personally didn't like the sound of it either and don't understand why anyone would like anything about it. specially when there's so many vsts that can make all kinds of sounds of stuff.

seems like a really good time and place to bring that up doesn't it? i mean.. now that it doesn't exist anymore except in logic from apple.

so furious. they should pay me for my time i spend downloading free updates of stuff. i had to click 3 things with my mouse and then set my computer down and go water my pot plants.

I was a PC dev for years and now a MAC dev but the MAC (even though it's more expensive) is superior in all ways. If you can't afford one then save up - it's worth it.

Never heard of you PC-dev. Good you moved to Mac. :D

It was (is) one of the "super synths" that can do many methods of synthesis, only one other in that category has as much popular claim to be the best, and that synth is twice the price Alchemy was. it has a fantastic VA section, modulation options galore, and good granular, additive and spectral modes. it is the opposite of a one trick pony. so, sure most of the sounds you can make with it you could make with something else, but that's the same with any synth. if you have NI Komplete, you have more capability, but not in any one plugin. It is also pretty intuitive to understand and program.

It is billed as a "sample manipulation synthesizer" so yeah its main deal is screwing around with samples. not sure why that's controversial or trivial. you could, with much effort and swearing, do a lot of that with Kontakt, but if mangled samples are what you want, Alchemy is a much more elegant solution. Add to that soundsets by some great designers, it's deservedly popular. its not going to be everyone's cup of tea, and I don't know that it is worth killing yourself over, but Alchemy is a great synth.

I don't know why I feel upset about this, but I do.

I suppose it is exclusive to Apple and Logic Pro now. I had written Alchemy off... I suppose for me that will be the case for good.
I expected that so i sold all CA before they went to Rio. :D

@dayjob - Sarcasm? It was just my honest opinion, I figured someone might chime in with what they used it for. I admittedly didn't spend much time with it but it seems to get a lot of praise, so wanted to know what all the arguing was about.

@ShawnG - Ah, that makes sense. There was probably a lot more under the hood that I didn't see.

I guess if this synth was my bread and butter across several projects, I'd be angry too. If Massive or Zebra was bought out by some developer and wouldn't be updated except in a DAW I don't use I'd be pretty pissed off too, I wouldn't exactly wish death on the developers but it would be annoying so I see where people are coming from.

NONE of this changes the fact that I cannot bring myself to drop $2500 Canadian dollars on a *half* decent Macbook. Logic has my full attention at this point but for chrissakes, how do you all of you people afford to fork over that much for a basic 15" i5 with limited storage, when $750 bucks gets an i7 PC with 8 gigs of memory and a TB of storage??

The only thing I can't get on my PC that I care about is Logic, but holy sh%^#t that is becoming one *monster* of a package!

OK, petulant whining is over for now. Time to go bask in the glow of the $1750 I saved :D
