Dune 3 vs. Hive 2

I find this Dune 3 patch to be very "warm" whatever that means. I think some people continue to confuse "it can't" with "I can't".
Anyway I don't concern myself with words that have no real meaning. All I care about is what comes out of the speakers.
It that regards I find both Hive 2 and Dune 3 to be very pleasing each in their own way.

As i said, i don't think in categories like "Warm = good, cold = bad". One of my favorite synths, Waldorf Largo isn't exactly warm either. It can do warm, yes, but, if you use the wavetables, it's cold by default, and the filters aren't too "warm" either. Really, noone has to feel insulted when someone says "his" synth isn't warm. It's just that i was quite surprised, and strongly disagree about the "Dune 3 is the warmest synth available" statement. That's nonsense.

That's only if you can prove that "warm" is a compliment and "not warm" is an insult. Since warm has no real definition you can't really do that.chk071 wrote: Fri May 24, 2019 9:47 pm Really, noone has to feel insulted when someone says "his" synth isn't warm.
I don't know who said Dune 3 is the warmest synth but since it's subjective maybe to that person it is the warmest synth for the types of sounds they do.
It's "warm" enough for me or to be more precise I like the sound. Just as I like the sound of many synths.

Anyway, Hive and Dune are both capable of very warm sounds. As are Zebra and all of the other u-he synths.

Dune 3 and Hive 2 both sound really fantastic.
They are so different. Dune has the option to run everything at audio rate but still is a very complex tool which is the main thing over most other (non modular) synths for me.
But i must say while i never was really interested in Hive v1, v2 is beyond awesome.
Not sure how to describe but it is one of the most musical synths i ever played with and the GUI and workflow is better than most other synths i like.
Another big plus over Dune 3 is the microtuning option.
Dune 3 is one of my favorite synths but i think i could like Hive 2 even a bit more.
Only thing v2 heat up my macbook pretty fast now.
Both synths indeed having great presets but also here the winner would be Hive 2 for me since the variety is bigger and it inspires me a bit more also.
The general workflow goes also to Hive 2 for me.
I like both. Neither could replace the other for certain sounds.

He he, I used the word ‘warm’ and there are a dozen posts about it!
Glad I didn’t say I think it sounds more analogue, I could have started a riot
They both sound great, happy to own them both and irrespective of what you think sounds better and why, I am pretty confident that the hive upgrade price was better than the dune upgrade price....well, it sounded better anyway

Hi Urs. I installed version 2 and I like it a lot. The new features are cool and the wavetable features are a very good addition to make very versatile sounds.
I know that audio rate FM is not really wanted in this special Hive concept. But whenever I screw up the rate knobs and it's just about to happen and then the process stops... That is so unforfilling and unsatisfying.
I beg you to push the LFOs into audio rate. Please do it. It's like a gedrosselte Vespa which only goes up to 45 kmh. When it gets too CPU heavy one doesn't need to do it. But it's so great to have a choice.
Is there any other chance to have FM in Hive2? I miss that option totally and it feels crippled down artificially too.
I am working a few month now with Meldas MSoundfactory and there the LFOs do audio rate which sounds really good and is absolutely low on CPU usage even if you use multiple LFOs which modulate each other. I am sure this can be easily achieved in Hive2 too.
Beside that Hive2 is a fantastic synthesizer I will use a lot.
I know I am not Hans Zimmer and there won't be a nichttuntun version of Hive2 but maybe nevertheless my wish will become true some day?
Hoping the best. Respect and Regards.

There's a concept for that, but it didn't make it into this version. One of the pre-requisites is to optionally decouple the main oscillator modulation settings from the SubOsc - so they can be tuned independently. This turned into a bugfest and was reverted for the time being. It's also still in question whether this takes away from Hive by making it more complicated, not just due to adding a new synthesis type but also because it requires maybe three or four more UI elements.

Thank you for the info. I am on your side with FM.Urs wrote: Sat May 25, 2019 7:37 pmThere's a concept for that, but it didn't make it into this version. But with LFO audio rate only the LFO has to go faster and you wouldn't need another GUI element. Cheers

Filter FM could also be another possibility without needing any GUI changes.

I'd like if there were some FM.. probably not must have, but I think it can be cool for some sounds. I like how it's implemented in Zebra and SM 2.8 . In both cases it does the job, not exactly FM8 (which might be too complex for me), but you can do cool stuff regardless.
I've been demoing both Hive and Dune 3 (I don't own either lol), and what I seem to like about Hive is how there's very little menu diving, even less than Zebra or Diva. The GUI of Dune 3 otoh might not be ideal for me

Back to the original subject (see the title), it appears that Hive 2.0 has become a formidable competitor to Dune 3.0, Serum, Spire, Massive X and other top tier synths. I can’t wait to see what u-he does with Zebra 3!
