Hive preview (April 1 update)

U-NO-LX Update: PWM is fixed, LFO fully implemented.
Portamento is done as well as I understand it, but Hive's glide is considerably different from Hive's. Uno's glide has an option to only activate when keys are overlapped (something sorely lacking in Hive imo, I really like it), and the glide time goes much, much longer. It also takes longer the further away from a key you are, unlike Hive which always has a constant time (keyfollow may help but not enough I think).
To do: Control and Arp sections, batch mode and patch morphing. Bit of calibration still to do, but I'm starting to appreciate the differences between the two synths and I think I'm fine if the patches don't totally null-test.
Here's another eight converted patches from the fine Uno collection.

I dabble, but not enough to actually release soundsets and whatnot. Truth be told, I only started getting deep into VSTs and synthesis in general in the past six to eight months. I figured moving sounds from one synth to another would be a good hands-on way to learn how synths actually work and welp, here we are.

Dumbledog - I think so yes. Don't quote me on that.
Here is one instance of Hive browsing through some drumloops I forced out of it, sampled into an audio track in Live. At the end there's another instance of Hive performing guitar duties. Absolutely pointless cover of a small bit of Nirvana's "In Bloom". Lots of modwheeling about. Why has this been done? Why not. I love this synth. It is supremely versatile.

I've heard Urs is sweating in Australia and looking for new waveforms?

And it's pretty much done! Think I'll make a new thread but I just did a run of all the Juno factory banks and it does a pretty decent job, with the exception of a couple of SFX with high resonance/keytrack (73 Whistle for example).
Time to do all the batches and make a new thread.

Urs, is it possible to make the EQ show the actual frequency? I know you're supposed to listen by ear, but it makes it harder for me to convert some of Sylenth preset to Hive because of that.

I checked by setting the delay (both channels) to 1/8D and TimeBase to 1/4. Multiply needs to be set to around 133.33 for the rhythms from arp and delay to match. For triplet arpeggios / sequences, set Multiply to 150. BTW 66.67% and 75% will do the same at half speed.dumbledog wrote:Say just for my sanity -- a dotted 1/8th note arp is the same as a 1/4 arp with the Mult set to 150, correct?
Having said that...I haven't checked my sanity this morning!

Alright, thank you kindly. I was hoping I wouldn't have to shoehorn a repeating decimal into a fixed-length number.
Anyway it's done, download thread is here and I'm working on implementing patch morphing. Got it mostly done last night but I've run out of modulation slots so I have to reprioritize, argh.

Love the new bio on Hive's page. It's just as versatile as I'd hope, and it certainly reassures more people ^__^.
As for new features besides the stuff I mentioned before...curiously, I think Zebra may actually have been the wrong place to look at with regards to potential new features. I tried to be relatively conservative with what I listed (MSEG's, Mod-mappers, XMF filters, comb filters, formant filters etc is definitely not the way to go), but I think Diva is actually be a better place for inspiration on where Hive could go. Hive, in many ways, is a much more modern version of Diva which is another relatively simple VA/subtractive synth with big sound. Zebra is another thing entirely.
So in that regard, unabashedly looking at Diva....OSC FM (Xeno Soundworks also seems to really want this
), hard/soft sync, PWM, ring-mod, feedback...
New unique waveforms are always great. I love the beautiful waveforms from Diva's digital osc, especially the tri-wrap, but something more unique is always welcome.
Of course, the main thing about Diva is that it's semi-modular given it's based on a number of classic synth. I don't think however that's such a good idea with Hive given that I feel it's important that Hive has it's own (modern) character. Plus, going the modular, even semi-modular route, throws a wrench at the Sylenth-simplicity this one is going for. I'm not sure that's the right way to go with Hive at all.
For the envelopes, Diva does have those quantized/curved envelopes.
Diva has those Pre/Post filters, but I feel 50/50 about those given that Hive already has an EQ. Sure, they are quite different from just a three-band EQ, but It may take things too far.
As for effects, I did note before about more shaper/distortion effects which hopefully can be pulled off. Gotta love that Rotary-distortion ^__^.
Sure, Diva has much more than that, but remembering that you'd prefer stuff that doesn't add more knobs to it makes it tricky, and keeping it streamlined will always be much more important that stuffing it to the brim.
In fairness, I think, with some more waveforms and perhaps more distortion effects, I'm not sure I could ask for anything else that wouldn't ask for more knobs. Given that the sound is as deep as it is, I think that's fair enough

Some mindless noodling over a repetitive drum loop using the Hive, and a few of my sounds.

Here's another one for Hive. Michael sent me his sounds, so I took on the challenge of creating a track with just those sounds. Please pardon the emphasis on "composition", which means 1) don't try to dance to it; 2) the sounds aren't show-cased as well as they could be. Hopefully it's better than radio static
