Perhaps, as some brain researchers have determined, that language was developed from the 'music' center in our brains. Of course that early evolutionary development has been replaced by the iPod center.

We humans are excellent 'pattern matchers'. We love our patterns. We even make 'em up when there aren't there.

And the most modern music creation software is, yep, pattern-based. A coincidence? I think not.
perception: the stuff reality is made of.

Music is that which, if it were removed, would render most of KVR aimless and without purpose.

Music is what you play on an iPod, unless it's podcasts of stuff that's not music.

Music is the Naked Truth. Well, to be precise: Bubblegum Music is the Naked Truth.

Music is a great excuse to spend all kinds money on software and gear.

Music is a pretty flower... that smells BAD. No, wait! That's logic.

Music is my thing,
Jibunrashiku nareru!
Music in my heart,
tokimeki narashite!

Music is my thing,
Ichido dake no merodii!
Music in my heart,
tsuyoku kara detai!

Music is my thing,
karada wo ugokasu!
Music in my heart,
hikari wo kanjite!

Music is my thing,
Shiro to kuro de egaku!
Music in my heart,
owaranai haamonii!

The difficulty of expressing what music is using words is exactly why music exists in the first place. Any "organized noise" that accomplishes that task is music.

For me:

Melody + Harmony + Rhythm = Music

Take one of these 3 away and it's no longer music.
Of course some people will disagree.

with respect, anyone who thinks for even a moment will disagree. the fact that a solo monophonic instrument is perfectly capable of producing music proves this.

When a solo monophonic instrument is playing a musical piece all 3 elements are there.

Obviously there is a melody.
There is also a Rhythm, the player doesn't trigger notes randomly but keeps count and plays notes to a rhythm.
True, nobody plays the harmony part but it is still present with all it's rules.
A good musician that sits in the audience can write down the cord progression just by listening to the melody.

well that's not always going to be true either, but in any case... i believe that your definition should read:
Melody + Harmony + Rhythm = Music I might enjoy

Take one of these 3 away and it's no longer music I could enjoy.
