This month we actually discourage original compositions - or at least that's the way I see it.
That's the way you see it, but it's not the truth. Only the starting sample content is from others. Your *composition*, on the other hand, will be 100% original.

Would this be improved if I changed it to be allowed to use your own past material? That could be done if you want.

Besides, did we get this much grief for our regular cover contests when "we actually discourage original compositions"?
I know remixing is a great thing - and good for the people who do so, but I have no interest in that whatsoever and, unless I change my mind later I will for the first time will not even bother following the discussions or download the entries.
Yet you participated in the October 04 contest, which was almost the exact same thing: you used found sounds to make a new composition. Only in that case the sounds came from a microphone. I don't know how much you hated the process, but your entry obviously had a lot of work behind it and sounded good.

So what's the big deal with this month? You're using found sounds, only from other people's files. The composition is still yours.

And while songwriting is a great thing, some people suck at it. And the songwriters typically win these contests. But here we have a chance for the abstract audio manipulators to shine, for a change! I'm not going to feel to bad about that.

The theme is not always going to appeal to you. I've disliked the choice many times itself. But I've always found it worthwhile to make myself do it, in the end.

If you're flat out short on time, don't feel that you have to participate. Pick your battles as they suit your life. You're welcome to come back at any time.
No voting anymore, so nobody will bother to listen anymore.
That probably isn't the case. From my download counts, I'd say it wasn't so last month.
What's the point?
The point is to be challenged. Yes, it's like a "cooking class".

At least that's what I think these contests are about.
Are we planning to bring it back again?
Bring back voting? Yes. Perhaps even this month: I never said it definitely wasn't happening this month.

Bring back "the spirit of the contest?" I think it's still here.

Just give us a little patience.

Oh, and make sure to check the GRAVEYARD thread later today: I'm posting some isolated horn samples from past entries. Maybe that can get you started. You're also free to post some of your material even if you don't participate: some of those acoustic guitars would be very handy. (herodutus has done that himself.)

OK (maybe) I'm just childish about this. I am really just plain nostalgic about the voting that is now not a feature of the monthly thingy anymore. Yeah I have done some "remixes" before and a few covers. Actually, I have done many covers, so I don't know really why I am bitching about that. It is not such a bad thing per se. The art of remixing as practices here is far better than those "euromix" CDs that one can buy at the local record stores at least.

It was just very suspicious how the voting part has now become a number out of the hat to determine who gets the prize. OK I know that the same people got the prizes all the time, but that was because the were consistently the best I'd say. I miss some of the older contestants. Remmy, Sleek, etc still do the odd one or two a year entries, but we do not see them so much anymore. At least we do have our never say die contestants like yourself who still keep things up.

OK, I'll stop moaning for 10 minutes now.

who said theres no voting this month though ???

i beleive the voting was only suspended this once seph, due to the theme being celebrating moog and his toys
the prize was a complete surprize to all but phz so i think that was just donated by gmedia again because of the moog connection.
as far as im aware were bact to voting from now on :)

It'll happen again. Probably this month, in fact.
Yeah I have done some "remixes" before and a few covers.
Just remember, this is *not* a remix contest. Nor is is a "mash-up" contest.

You are merely taking raw material from past tracks to create a new one. The new track is entirely your own creation.
It was just very suspicious how the voting part has now become a number out of the hat to determine who gets the prize.
Actually, I kind of liked the innocent simplicity of a name out of the hat. More important, though, is the number of entries we got despite the apparent lack of prizes: that got me some of my faith in the community back.
OK, I'll stop moaning for 10 minutes now.
That's okay. You can have doubts. But just look at Beardedone, who just about every month has a moment of "I can't do this", then proceeds to learn about it and gets the job done, impressing the heck out of everyone! ;) Always amazes me with how much he grows by rising to the challenge.

Seph, lighten up. Your entries are usually top notch and they always whip my song's ass. So what if Markleford's October contest is not for you...frankly not for me either...but it's a cool concept and kudos to Mr Mford for it.

I hope we can have another double month with 4 minute tracks in Dec/Jan!!! :)

ducking while typing....

So there was a 'prize' for the Moog contest then? I've been out of the contest loop working on my Chrysalid track.

Just curious.

well.. I thought the no-voting thing was a try out for a month to explore other ideas.. cause "some" people were bitching too much about the rules!...

personally I don't like the no voting ... I have to admit to not listening to any of the other entries this month.. cause I didn't have to... so didn't allocate any time to it..

for which I apoligize...

but, with voting I'm forced to ...;)

this months theme seems like a good theme to me... I have to admit to enjoying the more concrete theme's rather than robs airy fairy arty farty ones though ;)... me fav's being the mic one, the dance music, the sci-fi theme, the one instrument only .. etc... ... but that's just me.. and as it's robs comp (err.. except when it's markleford's) then I don't really mind and still enjoy it
