FOP? That man's a musical genius. I know, many will disagree but heck, no matter what they say, he'll REMAIN a musical genius.

Couldn't have put it better myself. ;) I was saying something the other day in my thread along simillar lines. I'm glad it's not just me who feel's like he's reached saturation point and now just wants to make some music...

Well you can think he's a genius if you want.
But the word 'fop', which the American Heritage Dictionary defines as:

" A man who is preoccupied with and often vain about his clothes and manners; a dandy"

applies to him whether he is a 'genius' or not.

So you might as well add pretty much every musician of the 20th Century and beyond to that list then !!!

Prince is a true musical genius whom us mere mortals can merely aspire to. His writing, performance and production skills are unsurpassed. His influence is still powerful today and as Deggy says, you won't see a better live show on the planet. A tighter, more proficient set of musicians you will never see.

Anyway, back on topic. I suffered from that terrible affliction called gear lust for some while, buying all the latest kit and now half of it sits gathering dust :( I managed to curb my lust for some while, especially when my divorce came thru'. That was until I got into software synthesis and it all started up again. At least with software, you can use a demo and maybe make a more informed choice. Add that to a more mature outlook on expenditure and i can keep the lust under control ;)

I recently tried hooking up just my S6000 to my RM1x and a MIDI master keyboard and actually had a lot of fun with that set up. I think we can all be guilty of getting swamped with the toys and the technicalities and forget the one reason we all do this.....making music.

Gear lust is not just limited to musicians. I have been a painter for a long time, and for years thought the only thing keeping me back was not having the latest brush or canvas or color. I found that limiting myself to a few well chosen colors and brushes forced me to really learn my materials. My paintings have been much better since. I have found the same with my music gear, I just with I had realized it several thousand dollars ago.

My gearlust is at an all-time low, I'm banging out track after track (not all market-ready but I couldnt care less).

This marks the end of a lenghty lull for me, maybe it was all pent up inside
So what piece of gear did you have to buy to achieve this feeling? :D

To jump in, it wasn't any particular piece of gear for me. It was the realization that I could do what I want to do musically with any of a number of hosts and instruments. It's more about sticking with something long enough to know it inside and out and focusing on composition and performance.

No kidding. I really could have done without my brief flirtation with vintage analog gear. I'm still trying to unload a bunch of that stuff.

I don't want to hijack this worthy thread, so I will say one more thing about this genius and leave it be.

I live in Minneapolis and have been hearing about this LIVING GIANT since he was an indie artist. If people want to praise him (even though all of his most interesting music sounds like a slicker, more commercial ripoff of George Clinton) I understand.

But saying that we all aspire to be like him is just plain wrong. As a counterexample let me introduce a really great songwriter from the same place and time who has made less in his lifetime than Prince has made in the past 5 minutes.

His name is Paul Westerberg. He is every bit as influential as Prince is (more so, seeing as he did actually invent his own sound) but he doesn't win Grammies and he doesn't wear ridiculous clothes. He dresses like any other normal human being.

And he has written and forgotten more great songs than Prince will ever write.

If you haven't yet, give the poor guy a listen.

And this isn't even OT. Because I am pretty sure that he could do his thing with the humblest, least gearlustful DAW you could buy today.

I would read KVR a bit less if my gear lust was tamed.
