if u use this after GCO u can get a nice warm sound

but not the qualtiy of the 1176
let's do it like in the other thread:

you post an example of what unique sound the 1176 can achieve and also post the dry sample and I try to match it - deal?
can i play when i get home on wensday?

it will be a drum loop ;)

I took the acoustic guitar sample from that UAD-1 website, and tried to approximate the sound and settings on the Kjaerhus GCO-1, and got very close (did the same with the LA2A and the bass example and got extremely close). The thing to pay the most attention when doing this, is the attack and release times of the original units, as well as the knee and the type of compression. The LA2A was more difficult to approximate than the 1176 because the LA2A is an Opto compressor with a second release stage (which GCO-1 can also have). In all honesty, by the end of this experiment I was not be able to tell any of these apart from the original UAD-1 processed versions in blind testing. If you want, I could provide the presets once I get home from work. If you want em, PM me. And if you don't believe me, just read up on how these units work, what their attack and release times are (or range to) what their knee's look like, etc, then go to the UAD-1 page and download the processed and unprocessed examples as well as the settings from the originals and within a few minutes you'll be so close you'll be amazed. Seriously, try it folks. If you have it set up right, and could consistently hear the difference in a blind test I'd be amazed.
I'm sorry this post wasn't about techno.

For what it's worth, I got the BuzComp BCL101 compressor sounding pretty close on that acoustic guitar sample. But the compression they used doesn't sound particularily distinctive. You need drums to test it out, and Vinnie Colaiuta™ is not sharing.

Be sure to check out Buzcomp's stuff; he's making some amazing plugins for dirt cheap. His mastering compressors rival Waves!

I think the LA-2A has an attack of approx. 9ms and a static ratio of 4:1? The amount of peak reduction is the same a the threshold ?

Mmh... GCO has a opto-mode and it could be that after some tweaking the results are similar to an LA-2A.

Waves isn't all that, so hardly a good comparison, but in their own right, the BUZ comps and limiters are great..I use the buzmaxi all the time :D

I guess, if you say so...just considering how much they cost, it makes BuzComp all the more impressive, I thought.

Although I don't own the UAD 1176 I would suspect the PSP Audio VintageWarmer could do something similar...

Post

Actually, the PSP MixPressor is supposed to have 1176/LA-like compression, come to think of it.

EDIT: oh yeah, here it is:

Nice find, bduffy... :) That has got to be the closest approximation...
