best way to preview samples?

so what do you guys consider the best way of previewing samples before you feed them to the sampler?
give me all sorts of different opinions .. the more the merrier ..
i myself mostly just double-click on the wavs in the explorer which then feeds them to winamp .. but this is kinda slow ..
i know that some samplers have this sample-preview, but mostly i'd like to hear of some sampler-independent solutions ... since i'm not choosing my sampler based on the preview capabilities ;))
btw,
for drum sounds and other single-hits, i just feed them all to a sampler which then auto-maps them across the keyboard ...
and then i just play along the music and use the ones i like ..
you know, one sampler full of hi-hats, one with snares .. one with one-shot sfx for example and so on ..
...
so how do you do this?
