so what do you guys consider the best way of previewing samples before you feed them to the sampler?

give me all sorts of different opinions .. the more the merrier ..

i myself mostly just double-click on the wavs in the explorer which then feeds them to winamp .. but this is kinda slow ..

i know that some samplers have this sample-preview, but mostly i'd like to hear of some sampler-independent solutions ... since i'm not choosing my sampler based on the preview capabilities ;))

btw,

for drum sounds and other single-hits, i just feed them all to a sampler which then auto-maps them across the keyboard ...

and then i just play along the music and use the ones i like ..

you know, one sampler full of hi-hats, one with snares .. one with one-shot sfx for example and so on ..

...

so how do you do this?

sample catalog is nice. it's listed in the "other links."

sample catalog seems nice but a little overkill .. have to testdrive it, though ..

thanks ..

i think same thing with loophorse ..

how does the preview work in these? (i'll install them later)

Post

sample catalog crashed when i tested it and played back just a couple of standard windows samples in the windows dir ;)

btw, i want to re-iterate that basicly what i want is a fast and easy way to play and audition drum (and other) samples along with my songs before i import them into my seq or sampler ..

are there any filemanagers that are directed at musicians? .. i mean filemanagers such as total commander and windows explorer .. that can do everything .. but have at least some special features directed at musicians?

I think I've seen some file explorer extension that allow single click auditioning and so on... but for use, those are kack.

And a couple of filemanagers such as Xplorer2 (the clear winner in usability for me) provide these auditioning gadgets... I think PowerDesk Pro had one too. But for me they're always too clumsy to use (oh how I wish they made it possible to configure those media playing parts per directory so that it'd only appear when viewing sample directories, for example!).

Loophorse so far has been the most useful one, especially since I like the simplistic functionality for marking and copying selected samples to a selected location.

It does skip automatically playing a file every now and then (like one in twenty), or it only plays a short part from the beginning. But for 99% the time it simply rocks :) I used to dig WaveBrowser, and before that the little freebie FL makers provided years ago, but Loophorse and me formed a loving relationship right at the first date.

(And the author is a nice person, btw.)

cool. thanks ..

i have to try especially those filemanagers .. have been using total commander since '99 when i switched from amiga to pc ..

i actually just mailed the total commander team a few feature requests such as autoplay (modifier-click media to immediately start playing sound) and more windows .. nowdays i always have at least 2 or 3 total commanders open because i frequently use stuff from so many dirs ..

Post

hmm, i prefer the split-screen ones, though .. should've mentioned that ..

"wav browser" seems good and simple for the task .. but maybe a bit /too/ simple .. it seems it doesn't even support drag'n'drop .. you know, for when you find a good sample and drag it into your sampler

Man, lovin' that SampleCatalog! Pretty much has it all - thanks for the tip, CC4.
