Do they have to be my Mom's?
Can't I use my own :?:
:hihi:

I'm told that egg cartons aren't nearly as effective as one would think. I was going to do this until someone somewhere told me not to bother wasting my time. I think it was a Future Music or SOS article.

Oh, I certainly agree with that. I was just trying to be funny.
You won't catch me gluing anyone's egg cartons to my studio walls! :hihi:

Home made panels of high density fiberglass are infinitely more effective, and not really that expensive or difficult to make.

Post

Actually, they are highly effective, but only within a limited frequency range. But they do remove alot around 500 - 1000Hz which makes them good in class rooms and such.

And if you don't have the money to buy or make your own they are still better than nothing.

To say that they not work is just stupid, I think the author of whatever article you wrote LM, meant it not litterarely. If you study how they are built and if you try them, you'll see that they do work. If they work in
a proffessional studio is whole other issue. I meant to use in home studios or such.

Fair enough! However, I believe the person was trying to trap bass frequencies. Good to know, though.

Yes, and I did give hime some hints about that too,
didn't I?

There are some great acoustic sites out there, if anyone is interested.

When it comes to speaker solutions I too had problems with not enough low end and not enough air in my tunes.
I "fixed it" with listening on my music on a variety of
speakers and in bedrooms, livingrooms, cars and so on.
Then I tried to make up for the loss I had in the room I mixed my songs in. This wasn't a big success, though I did get some improvements. But relying on a dead room is every engineers key to a good mix, IMO.

When it comes to music I have after some research, in my modest experience, found that nearfield monitoring just takes you part of the way, and may work for projects not aimed for big audience listening. If you're gonna play your music in discos or whatever you need to mix on bigger equipment. IMO.

Btw, I do use a pair of Fostex PM1 and a Samson Resolve 65a in my project studio, which does the job. But I never mix on them. But that's just me, maybe I'm just not good enough engineer to mix on small speakers.. For tv they are great though.

zOap, your sig is to big.

Um, is it just me or do I come off sarcastic and uptight in every post I write? Oh well, It is probably my bad english. I read your post again Lunch Money and then I read mine. And it did seem like you were offended by my line "stupid to..."... I didn't mean to call you tupid. I wouldn't dare, I have great respect for your beliefs and your experience, as both a programmer and engineer.

Just needed to get that off my chest,

have a nice evening everyone.

I think what matters is the size of the room and the size of the monitors. There has to be a comparison there somewhere. I think.....besides you don't have to have it loud to mix it down. IMHO
Just trying to learn about recording, that is if my head is not too hard.

Agree, big monitors in a small room will create more problems than most abosrbents can handle.

When it comes to volume it depends on what style
you're mixing I think. And what audience you are ixing for. Eg, club tracks have to be mixed loud, while radio mixes can be mixed at a more sencible
volume. But it is important to check your mix at different volumes to see if it meet your needs.

In the movie/tv branch we have our volume set to
85dB, which is supposed to be what theatres play back at. But this varies from place to place, but still this is the standard that we follow. Atleast in my country, and I think it is the dolby standard.

Nice choice! I have the RP6's myself and am very pleased with the clarity of them - very balanced too :)
