You can do such an effect in realtime with Logic's Spectral Gate. Maybe there are other manufacturer with similar plugins. I remember having done such an effect with a denoiser plugin a few years ago, but I don't remember the name of the plug...

The effect comes from the transformation to the frequency domain, a whatever processing there, and the back transformation to time domain. That's why an ordinary bitcrusher or samplerate reducer doesn't sound like your example.

Hope this helps! :)

Just pressed the "submit" button and this pressed kinda "remember" button in my brain

The effect I used was the Denoiser plugin from Sound Forge (the old one with the finger print method). I set it to extreme values and got a result like your example...

God that's a bizarre effect. But yeah, perfect for this application - it really gets the highpitched warbling sound, I've never heard from lo-fi type plugins.

@mckenic: I'm pretty sure that you can achieve this effect with PVexag. It has small latency you can get quite realtime with it.
the the impotence of proofreading

not real time, but it sounds like the noise reduction in audition (when abused slightly). for what it's worth...

Many thanks again folks...

Lots to try out!

Thank you!

id just use that as an impulse response and see what happens hehe

I would NEVER have thought of that!!!

check out spear:
http://www.klingbeil.com/spear/

it will do some gnarly FFT stuff
which sounds a lot like low bitrate mp3s (think aphex twin - equation)
very cool proggie

samplerate reducers don't do the job at all. completely different thing with mp3. Basically many effects with FFT processing could achieve it, like the pv stuff.

There's spectralmonkeyage, if you can still find it somewhere.

Or you could just use the real thing instead: encode to mp3, and back to wav format. That's what I'd do.

Post

Im after grabbing that LAME encoder mentioned earlier & have a feeling thats what Im after :hyper:

I love spectralmonkeyage too and will try Spear - I'll let you guys know!!!

Thanks again,
Dave

I think the right mixture of noice cancellation plugs and a handy bit-crusher would do the right job

Post

I agree that FFT plugins are the best direction to look in for this purpose. The PV plug is a good recommendation, and I believe ConcreteFX has a free spectral gating plugin which may do the job.
