TBT has a really REALLY good sample-rate reducer. You could try that. His FTP details are on KvR somewhere.

Do you want a real-time solution?
Bitcrunchers will reduce the bitrate, but I'm not sure they'll give you the harmonic aliased artifacts that are synonymous with mpeg compression. If all else fails, get a copy of http://winlame.sourceforge.net/ and run it though your own lo-rate settings.

The samplerate reducer by TBT is not a bitcrusher, it can shift from 44100 to 1 if need be - and nyquist would suggest that the harmonic aliased qualities of mp3 could be reproducable with it.

Chibs' Bath Toy - Good suggestion to check out TBT, his saturator is nice. Sorry for the misshap, I wasn't deliberatly debunking your suggestion. I was generalising about bitcrushers, not sample rate reducers. Chill dude

Thanks for the ideas guys off to check some out!
Realtime would be ideal as I would like to use the effect on small sections of a drum track...
Thanks again!

Oh I wasn't being funny, I just mean to explain why I recommended the pluging. Not an attack on your suggestion at all sirorangenut wrote:Chibs' Bath Toy - Good suggestion to check out TBT, his saturator is nice.
