Thanks for the recommendations. Keep them coming!

Low - The Great Destroyer. Winner of no awards (afaik) isn't pop and 99% of the people you ask will never have heard of them. You can listen to the complete album @ http://www.chairkickers.com/ (their site) and find out for certain how pathetic the public are to ignore this band. As a bonus :P ...they're mormon.

not a fan of gorillaz at all but agree with the takk recommendation. also lillian by alias and ehren was one of my top buys as was the seal beach ep by the album leaf. and of course boc, the campfire headphase which while not perfect is still a classy piece of work.

on a more sing song recommendation, jack johnson, in between dreams is very good and i was very suprised at the new notorious big album i bought for my girlfriend.

cheers,

steve.

While my post count isn't exactly impressing at all, I say listen to vurt when he speaks to you: "Sigur Rós: Takk..."

Why even buy one album?

If I bought a release, it would have to be from an artist who is not represented by RIAA.

I think Arcade Fire and Out Hud were very singalongable. Not sure if those albums were from '05, though.

i was gonna say 'Funeral' from the Arcade Fire as well. Probably my favorite CD I bought last year. However it was pointed out to me that it was originally released in '04.

Additionally, it sounds like it could have been recorded in the late 70's or early 80's, so it sort of goes against one of the requirements in this thread. Regardless, it's an absolutely wonderful album.

I have some bootleg recordings of Bowie singing backups with them at some live show, it's brilliant 8)

Well, this is true for many albums I've seen mentioned. I'm not even sure what 2005 is supposed to sound like (except, maybe, retro- or retroish).
Which makes me wonder why I haven't mentioned Sufjan Stevens.
Why, I suppose I just have.

how about 'modern' and 'now' and 'that couldn't have been done a year ago'

see my recommendation of Frances the Mute from The Mars Volta 8)

I think you're looking for Vagabond Neologist. ;)
