Hey, you're right. Let me so bold as to shut-down the Cher debate on this thread:

"I am 100% certain that the producer did not use the ***VST*** version of AutoTune in Cher's song".

Please post your example of the digitech processor doing this in 1998, thanks!

(I know you can't, much like all the other newbies who claim this and many other weird ideas)

...wherareas anyone can download auto-tune and make the effect happen on any audio track in about 3 seconds by turning "Retune speed" to 0.
According to http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/feb99/a ... cks661.htm it was a Digitech Talker foot pedal mixed with a sequenced tone from a Nord Rack.

Like I said, the producer lied. Post proof of your track processed with the Talker.. Not a single person has EVER made that sound with a Digitech Talker footpedal. It's laughable! Have you used one? I have. Give me a break. Either post proof using a talker, or sit down. The Producer may have used a talker on the track as an effect, but it wasn't responsible for what people call 'the cher effect' of audio instantly being retuned to the next part in a melodic line.

I read the article a long time ago but did not believe the producer. It's fairly common for producers to deny using Auto-Tune. Famous clients prefer things this way. I doubt he wanted to get the stigma attatched to him as that "Guy who used Auto-Tune"

Perhaps it wasn't outright lying, but he ommitted the effect obviously everyone was wondering how to do.

The Digitech thing just will not die! Maybe it was up there on the grassy knoll.

I think you missed the second part of what I wrote. From what he states, it's not just the Talker doing the trick, it's the vocoding effect mixed with the sound from the Nord (albeit, we don't know "which" Nord sound was used).

So, what proof do you have that the producer lied? (Not trying to start a fight, I'm just curious why you don't believe him. I haven't played with a Talker and a Nord, so I don't know why you might think this isn't possible)

im gonna do the kvr thing now...

well if everyone was wondering how to do it,how come all you have to do is turn 2 knobs the opposite way to get that effect with autotune?

In the end, who really cares about re-creating that effect anyway???

You're right Andrew... Next time, I'll be a little more 'selective' about the topics I make light of...

...but in my defense, I thought this one had already been argued to death... many times over...

I'm with you. I don't want to argue at all, I was just curious why everyone is so adamant that it couldn't be made with anything other than Autotune.

Can't say that I'd ever want to use that effect, though.

Hey, cool argument. It's like arguing over the best way to produce the smelliest turd. (I still say the key is to eat lots of cheese. get nice and blocked up. let the turd sit in there and stew for a while.)

So uh, how about Kid Rock's "Only God Knows Why"? Can we get an argument going over that one too? That would be awesome.

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.
