How many tracks can YOU use?

I was just wondering, on average, how many tracks all of you guys/gals use in Tracktion before your CPU meter starts wiggin' out. I know the types of plugs and the amout of processing power of your computer will have alot to do with this, but for me, it seems that once I get about 18-20 tracks going (sometimes less)I need to start freezing things .My computer is:

Pentium4
3GHz, 800FSB
1GB DDR2 SDRAM
160 GB Hard drive (7200)

Are these just audio tracks? I haven't had an extensive edit doing lots of tracks yet, but when I do I'd imagine my
performance would be way less than yours since I Have only a P4/1.9ghz/1gB 400mhz RDRAM, and a 7200rpm USB2.0 external disk (western digital).

It's assumed that you are using ASIO driver?

I am using 8 tracks for drums (vST) and 1 track for bass (VST)
all the rest are recorded analog. And yes, I am using ASIO drivers with my presonus firebox.

My setup is similar to yours, with the only major difference being, I have a second hard drive.
I run alot of NI stuff, Reaktor, GR2, Absynth, GC, ect. This stuff is extremely CPU hungry. My system starts wiggin when I have 6 to 7 of these in combination. Typically, I dont freeze. I'll render the track out, import the wav back in, and mute the VST track. I can usually get into the mid 20's before I start seeing cpu issues.

Do you use one hard drive dedicated for recording purposes, and the other for misc. stuff, or do you use both for recording? How do you have things set up?

I can do a large amount of tracks, but when I start using reverb, that's when it gets cut down. But with freezing, it's not a problem.

That is what I have come to realize, particularly with the Ambience Verb.

I got one drive with my OS and all apps. The other drive is where I write all my music files to. I have played around with differnt apps on differnt drives, but this seems to work the best for me.
