And my problem is... if I get a DSP card like the UAD or a Powercore... can I use the card simultaneously with my Terratec (for example: Recording with the Terratec, and limiting the recording with the UAD at the same time) or not.

Like I said... I've seen those cards in action, but I was never really into it and how they work together with recording cards.
Tracking is possible (I do it) but it's not easy.
Latency completely depends on your system and your sound card.
The formula goes like this:

(TL) = (NP) x (SL) x 2 + (SL)

(TL) - the Total Latency
(NP) - the Number of uad Plugs you use on the track
(SL) - your System(sound card) Latency

So if you run on 64 samples (1.4ms) like me and you add 1 compressor on your track then:
Total Latency= 1 x 1.4 x 2 + 1.4 = 4.2ms :)

If you add a second plug on the track, like a reverb.
Total Latency= 2 x 1.4 x 2 + 1.4 = 7ms :P

Of course if your system is set at 10ms things start to add up very fast.
For two plugs:
Total Latency= 2 x 10 x 2 + 10 = 50ms

- The terratec is the I/O card and general audio device
- The DSP card is an accelerated device for plugins/instruments that works as "add on" to my system. (like a coprocessor that only runs plugins).

So both cards run simultaneously.
Yes
The DSP is an add on "CPU" that runs your plugs.
Your sound card is still your input/output device that runs at the same time.

Okay, now I'm only curious how "low" the groupbuy went so far, and I'm satisfied. ;)

I have a feeling that I will probably be slightly disappointed by a UAD sound wise, but the CPU savings are intriguing.
I'll bet the opposite happens, you'll be blown away by the plugs but bummed that using the card does hit your CPU a tad.
This "tad" is very minimal.
Let's put it this way:
I use 5 LA-2A compressors and 5 RealVerb Reverbs all at the same time and my CPU will show less then 5%

The Flexi Pak is $594.15 with the 'group' code.

Thanks Uncle E- helpful as always ;)

when does the "group buy" end?

Post

so does this mean UAD-2 is on its way? come on E you can tell me ;)

I did as a "cost saving measure". The problem is that the stuff that comes with the Project Pak is really quite lame. UA carefully ferrets out their good stuff for "Project Pak". You'll need the more expensive "Studio Pak" for your purchase of UAD-1 to be worthwhile.

IIRC May 31st. As this is when the Roland FX Bundle sale ends.

Actually tho, in case anyone is reading this thread on the fence, I'm going to order from JRR SHop by the end of the month for the Flexi-Pak as well.

I already own one UAD (from JRR as well :)) but this deal is insane.
As Eric said, you get the Flexi-Pak for $595. Now, with the Flexipak you get $500 in vouchers, so you're paying $95 for the hardware.

Now, the Roland Pack is only $339.15 at Uaudio right now, which will allow you to also pick up another plug (in my case the only things I don't have are the precision mastering series, so I'll probably snag the EQ).

So in my case, 4 plugs and hardware for < $600. Its a pretty insane deal imo, even if they release new hardware in a month or so.
If it sounds good it is good.

I own a UAD Studio (also from JRR/Eric - wouldn't buy one from anywhere else - cheers Eric! ;)
I agree, the Porject Pack misses out on a lot of the good stuff.

As for UAD2, only rumours that UA are showing something cool on the 20th. The timing would imply it's a next gen UAD, but noone knows...

I wish I knew! We bought out all the remaining Studio Paks from UA which could turn out to be a bad move if a new card comes out soon. :(
The problem is that the stuff that comes with the Project Pak is really quite lame.
UA used to bundle things like the Pultec Pro or LA2A with it. They pretty much ended that when the Flexi Pak came out, though.

Thanks for the reminder, I'd forgotten myself!

Thanks for the kind words, guys. It does seem like it may be a good idea to wait till the 20th to see what UA has to say, although they have a tendency to release information prematurely. 6-12 months of waiting after an announcement is made seems to be the standard with them.

Hey, I had no intention to buy a second card before now, but 595$ for a flexi :-)

I've got to check the shipping price (shouldn't be too much, right?).

How do I deal with customs then? I remember you having special way of packing Uads so they wouldn't attract much attention from them :-)

k

edit: ouch, damn, the cheapest shipping option costs 146$, which doesn't make it that attractive anymore (I can get it here for around 850$).

Shipping is around $35 anywhere in the world. We use Fed Ex or USPS (USPS for Slovenia) for International shipments & those are both a lot cheaper than the UPS rates quoted on the site.

Post

wow, thanks

that makes it worth reconsidering again. :-)

where do I choose the cheaper option?

See PM.
