I love Crunchessor; its range of options allow fine tweaking of dynamics like hardly any other option, save
the SPL Attacker on Scope. Also, its easy on the CPU.
GCO is great too, and Vanilla Comp is on the same level,
and its free, but lacks a GUI.

Voxengo Marquis and Kjaerhus Golden Unipressor(with sidechain support)

If you qualify for the 50% educational discount, Wavearts Trackplug is definitely worth a look.. Regular price is $175 or so.

I think they still sell v4 for $90. That's the version I'm using...

Trackplug... Mmh... I own the Powersuite 5 and don't use it anymore. Trackplug I would not recommend. After testing other plugins on the market, first I would use Crunchessor or some of the free compressors like the Blockfish from DigitafFishphones rather then Trackplug5.
With some more money, only Marquis or Kjaerhus are the way to go (IMHO).

Compadre Beatpuncher is priced at $49 and comes with external sidechain support and sidechain filtering. It is not made for transparency though, but if you like its "sound" it offers plenty of tweakability to suit most purposes.

vanilla compressor is just great ... and free ...
also, pls dont laugh, but i find mda dynamics very cool ... i use it all the time ... if you want that optostyle-liveness, thats a great choice ... highly underrated imo ...
also stefancrs has made a compressor (also free), which i really like for vintage compression ...
