For the sorts of products your mention, why don't you just try the demos and see what works for you best?

justjazz, 'Linear & Clean' modes of Marquis is as transparent as things can be. A bit CPU intensive, though, in comparison to other compressors. But you have 'Round' detector as well - it does differ from other compressors.

I'd do a bit of research - you'll find hundreds of threads talking about compressors on KVR alone, pick a shortlist of the best according to popular opinion, and pick one that sounds good to you and you can feel comfortable with, and then get on with your music.

I mean, I know we all like gear, but it's there to service your music - as long as it's doing that, who cares whether your tool of choice is preferred by 8 out of 10 people? It's a compressor after all, it's not like it's your main guitar or anything. And if your ears aren't yet tuned to know the difference, either make a choice and get to know it, or stick with free/cheap stuff until you *can* hear the differences.

Just my ha'pennies worth...
(FWIW I prefer Waves RenComp and RenVox, Blockfish for real character stuff, and the UAD-1 comps for best of breed - I haven't really spent time with the mostly PC stuff like Voxengo, PSP and so on, so I'm not the best person to advise on those. Like I say, do some reading - there are a million threads here about them, without needing to rehash them all. The search function is your friend!

You're in a limited price range. I use Neodynium and PSP MasterComp--both out of your price range. Neodynium is an interesting compressor, although some don't get it.
If I were in your circumstances I'd go for the Marquis Compressor. I have not yet purchased it, but I have been so close. No side chain options, but you want it basic. Crunchessor has a side chain option.
I don't have the GAC, but I really like that one too. Nice variability of options and some attractive features over Voxformer (which I do have).
I'd also look at Vintage Warmer, but it isn't clean and it isn't basic or intuitive.

The Kjaerhus GCO-1 and Voxengo's Marquis are the two to buy IMO. I've only demoed Marquis but it's on my purchase list, and GCO-1 is just so damn good on it's own that I feel I can comfortably hold off on Marquis. Now will I be buying Marquis to replace GCO-1? Absolutely not, but I do feel both will compliment each other and you couldn't go wrong with either one, as they sound great and are extremely versatile. If you want something a little less intimidating and more inexpensive also check out the Kjaerhus GUP-1.

My recommendation would be to demo marquis, and polyquasher (and any other plugins that gets your interest), and see wich one sounds best on your music (i believe marquis will be a good choice for yuu but you need to demo for yourself)i own marquis and soniformer and believe they are amongs the best out here (to me personally they are best), but in the end recommendations are good and people can give you good insight but it all boils down to what works for you personally and your music. there are good reasons why all of us musicians have different plugins in our arsenal. its because we all make music differently and seek after a different type sound.i like flexibility,affordability,great sound and that wich is comfortable and intuitive when i use it- and for me marquis and soniformer fit the description.Many of us can come with our recommendations but you in the end have to demo with your music to see if it compliments it.Your going to have to spot a difference between each compressor you use, if you need help in spotting a difference then post a question asking what to look for.

i think funkybot touched on an important point aswell.funkybot owns gco-1 and plans to buy marquis later, this says what many of us feel, in the end one compressor will not satisfy you for ever and may not be suitable for all tasks, many want more then one for diverse sound, their are different sounds they want for their music and one plugin in the end usually won't cover all bases.It's about slowly building the perfect studio that works for you,Naturally one is the starting point i'm just trying to tell you one may not be the answer for every mix and the ending point.

If you're concerned about CPU, another reason not to get Soniformer (which I also have). If Marquis taxes your computer, you may want to think about upgrading. I think Marquis and Elephant would be an excellent choice.

I was VERY, VERY impressed with the compressor that comes with the 'JUICE PACK' from fruity loops.

It was coded by 'Slim, Slow, Slider' - I like compression for PUMP, SQUASH, SUCK, EFFECT and anything other than transparency - I found it to have a modicorum of some of those attributes.

For $99 you get a whole host of other fx as well - great value.
