Yes, that's spot on. I bought Reason 3 for around £140, and I can't think how I could possibly have bought a comparable package of VSTs for that cost.

Take a decent sampler, for example (and I believe that NN-XT is VERY decent ) - Kontakt alone would cost more than Reason! Or consider effects - none of the freeware reverbs compete with RV7000, there isn't a freeware alternative for Scream, and the M-Class mastering tools are excellent. Not only that, but none of the VST stuff can be linked up with the same flexible modular routing that the Reason environment offers.

Certainly in the final analysis you could produce a better package than Reason by selecting each item as a VST ... BUT it would cost A LOT more, it would be less stable, and it would suck your CPU dry far sooner in a project.

Well HQ and others may know my stance on Reason. Its a great program and I used to love using it as a standalone virtual studio. Its very stable, very CPU efficient and easy to use.

However, it didn't do everything I wanted like an audio input, midi clock output and a streamable wav file player. It also aliases audibly.

Used as a bunch of instruments in a virtual rack that is then rewired to your host and controlled by it... well, that did nothing for me, except annoy me.

Rewire never really worked properly in either host I tried, that is Tracktion and Live. To be honest this is not the Prop's fault, but problems with the way each host would implement rewire.

Supposedly Ableton with fix the rewire issue in the next version.

To get over the Live rewire problem you have to work in Reason's own sequencer to avoid nasty delays. These delays are incurred in Live's internal midi output to the rewire layer. Nothing you can do about it if you want to have your sequences in Live's midiclips, so you have to use Reason's sequencer.

Tracktion is much better in this respect. And it allows you to set compensation delays manually if you need to.

Personally, I would go the VSTi route within the host of your choice. You don't have to spend a lot to get really great instruments.
