When you rewire one or the other to a sequencer do you do the beat programming in FL or Reason and then rewire the stream or do you just use FL or Reason as sort of a sound module and only rewire the sound from it and do the actual pattern making in your sequencer. Thanks

I do both (with Reason).
Why do you ask?

Depends which you consider to have the superior editing and sequencing capabilities. When I used to own Reason, I was very fond of the NNXT and Maelstrom, but was glad I had ReWire as I wasn't really fond of Reason's own internal sequencer and piano roll. (nothing wrong with Reason's sequencer per-se, but I felt more comfortable using the ReWire Host to sequence the notes for the Reason channels themselves).

just trying to get a feel of how most people work. I am thinking of just using FL as a sound module so I won't have to deal with any delays at the start of the tracks.

If your goal is to use VSTs with and next to Reason using a VST host, then my suggestion is screw it. Get rid of Reason and go VST-only. Reason ReWire is such a freaking pain, ruins your workflow. Of course, to get rid of reason you need lots of cash to buy a workhorse synth, decent effects, a sampler, and a healthy sample library complete with loops, instruments, and percussion. But in the end, you'll have capabilities far beyond Reason. This move is not a good idea for the faint of heart. You'll have to do a hell of a lot of adjusting, learning, and cash spending.

Why not built you tracks from the ground up with FLS via MIDI programming/recording??jmbriley wrote:just trying to get a feel of how most people work. I am thinking of just using FL as a sound module so I won't have to deal with any delays at the start of the tracks.

I don't like rewire either. But the reason why I can't get rid of Reason is its incredibly light usage of CPU. I badly want to use Reason as a VSTi. If they don't implement this feature in the next version, I'll probably stop using it when I upgrade my laptop or when I get PoCo + Virus.

I Rewire Reason into Cubase SX but will do all MIDI editing in Cubase. I'll only use the synths and samplers, never Redrum.
I use a multi-out VST instance of FL Studio in Cubase and do all sequencing in FL Studio. I'll only using Fruity for drums though.

I don't mind rewire. That's probably because I like Reason, and have bothered to work it out.
I stick Reason in my host, hook up the instrument (usually a combinator) straight to the hardware interface and send midi from the host straight to that combinator. Many of my songs will have 24 reason channels, sometimes more. Each device played by a midi track in the host (or sometimes both in the host and the reason seq), directly selected *by name* (that is, in tracktion I select "drumkit", and the midi track in Tracktion plays the drumkit combinator in reason)
Workflow?
It takes no more time than hooking up a multi-output vst. Really. The only thing is I have to save the song twice. Which I can live with.
So to answer the first question, my drums are very often the Reason Drum Kits, but whether the midi is in reason or in Tracktion depends... If I have many time sig changes I usually do everything in Tracktion.
Any instrument I use in reason goes to a separate output on the Reason interface, and looks like any other instrument in Tracktion, I just have to alt+tab to see the rack.
I guess the answer is "both".
And happily.

I have:
Vember Audio Surge (Synth doubles as multi-fx)
Vember Audio ShortCircuit (Sampler with LOTS of internal effects)
QuikQuak RaySpace (Reverb)
Tone2 FilterBank2 (Filter/Multi-fx)
Xultop Chainer (Chains things and saves them like a combinator except not modular)
Free EQs, Destructions, Modulators, Delays, everything I need to replace Reason I have, except for:
Samples
But I'm getting there I assure you. I'll be getting Kontakt + VSL Opus Bundle, ProjectSAM ethnic percussion (when it's released), Scarbee Imperial Drums and then I'll be buying single instrument libraries from various companies. The only thing I'll still lack is:
Loops, Random Samples, Drum Hits, Maelstrom (which I don't feel I need to replace in any way). Will I continue to use Reason? That depends totally on what the developers introduce.

at the moment i use Reason rewired with Live, i think that reason's sequencer is not bad at all, maybe - there could be erase function using only mouse, but i have to say that i hate Live's sequencer - after energyXT getting rewire, i'm gonna so buy it. reason is anyway my no 1 tool and if you know how to use it then it's as good as any other software or better, it is PROFESSIONAL tool. i also have many refills and you can't get those instruments for that money, and those instruments are 8-10/10 IMO. (remember that often people think that raw instrument doesn't sound so Pro and it's cos it doesn't have any effects on it). + there's very wide refill instrument collection for reason.
Bottom line: Rewire isn't perfect but still very good and only solution for many of us.
