Fair enough everybody is entitled to their own opinions. I'd prefer not to use dongles but I've been using V8 with a dongle for about a year and a half with no problems. The word dongle seems to raise a lot of hackles and endless discussions. But as I mentioned to ttoz earlier in this thread I believe he uses Logic Pro which is also dongled so I'm not quite sure what his problem is. If I used some dongled software and they had announced an update, it would certainly be of interest. I make a point of mentioning my view on dongles not to convince you, but so that companies continue to know that they lose some potential users by the use of the dongle. I don't really expect a company that uses it to change their mind, but companies that may be thinking of switching may change their mind. The reason I asked there is that the forthcoming price rise suggests an effort by Ableton to somewhat reposition their product away from home musicians and more towards the more elitist end of the market where dongles are the norm...
I think it is to do with image (on their part). I get the sense they are trying to refine their brand, and very much operate in the PT/Logic/DP/Cubase territory, rather than the FL/P5/Reason/Sonar/Tracktion one. In that context choosing to go down the iLok route would have sent out another branding message. Recently we saw this exact thing done quite spectacularly by Roger Nichols of course
. Within the last week I have seen the Live update offer and been emailed by Cakewalk offering me P5v2 as a brand new customer for the exact same price
. Not that I would make that switch, but it poses an interesting contrast between the attitudes of two of the big developers... and I am likeing Cakewalk's approach better (though not their product) -

I would decide I like the current version of Live just fine and not upgrade anymore...
dongles are going to become worse. as more companies use them either the user will have more dongles, or more apps all depending upon one little device which if lost, stolen, or broken will shut down your whole setup.
If I am in the middle of a project, and my computer breaks, I can get another one that day, one way or another. Same with a midi controller, monitor etc. Only the dongle can set me back potentially a week or whatever as I go through the process of proving I'm not trying to steal, getting a replacement, authorization etc. It is the single most damaging point of failure in the studio and it serves me no use at all. Daft I say!
My current setup will run for years. If I do not upgrade anything, that is fine. Its all working well at this point.

But there are some parts of the Live 6 upgrade which I find damned tempting. And all of them, I might add, are in the inexpensive download upgrade . The fact that it is available for download hopefully also excludes any likelihood that they are going the iLok route at this point (phew!) but if they ever do it will certainly be a hard call.

Well, I don't know more than what has been posted about Samp9, but I know that I am gonna upgrade to it Dongle this, dongle that of all the hosts I've tried I like audio editing in Samp the best.
I am still using Sonar4 for creating ideas, but though Cakewalk are currently tempting me to upgrade to Sonar 5PE at the very reasonable price of 129.-EUR + free shipping (expires at the end of july if any Sonar4 user missed it), I've decided to upgrade Samp. Oh and btw Samps internal plugins rock and I am sure the new channel strip and reverb will be great
Btw, the dongle used by Samplitude isn't ILok, it's called codemeter and Magix are AFAIK the only ones using it in the audio market currently.
As for the whole dongle discussion, I hate them with a passion too, but I wanted Samp. And now, since I got the free AT2 upgrade I have a Synchrosoft one as well. Unfortunately I love both of these tools too much to get rid of them but I won't buy any more stuff that needs a dongle...
Regarding the price, well I used a cheaper backdoor, by buying an old version of Samp6 producer and the upgrade to Samp8 pro which was available at JRR-Shop for 599.-$ at that time. Due to the low dollar at that time it came down to ~500.- EUR incl. import tax I had to pay (~70.- EUR), still the most expensive software I ever bought, but it was worth it for me.
