If you're insinuating that it is not possible to get professional results on a par with, or better than anything out there without using a mastering engineer, then you're the one who is "dead wrong". Case in point: I have a friend who owned a small recording studio for a time. He sold it and now records his own stuff using Cakewalk pre-Sonar era software. His mixes are beautiful and pristine; far better than any professionally mixed and "mastered" tunes that I've heard anywhere, and I've been a musician for 45 years and heard it all. He's able to do this because he knows how to "listen" and has taken the time to really learn the mixing process. It's really in the mix, not the mastering where the "magic" happens. Yes, mastering engineers are needed, but only by those that don't know how to "listen" and mix correctly.
