hah, i made like three of these and never released them, thought nobody would want something like that.... it's gone now. poo. use ring and fm mod, and modulate the oscs with an lfo, for am, modulate the noise strength for fm. hah. oh well. back on the road tomorrow. peace.

Which makes me wonder- AudioMulch's RingAM does ring modulation and amplitude modulation, but is there an effect that does frequency modulation?

ndc's The Modulator 2

http://www.kvraudio.com/get/644.html
  • A comprehensive modulation effect, offering 3 types of modulation of audio signals: amplitude modulation, ring modulation, and frequency modulation.

There are three audio sources (audio input, oscillator, .wav file player), all of which may be used as either the modulator signal, or the carrier signal (and in some cases, both simultaneously). Also includes a fairly comprehensive MIDI implementation.

Richard Wolton 4ormulator Vocoder Extreme

http://www.kvraudio.com/get/1164.html
  • The 4ormulator, although similar to a vocoder, includes features not found in the traditional vocoder. In addition to generating internal carrier and modulator signals, the bandpass filters offer a wide range of resonance (Q) and there are envelope generators which allow modification of the spectral envelopes. This, coupled with harmonic control of bandpass placements and frequency modulators, results in many amazing effects which have never before been possible!

Tiny God Tiny Femme
http://www.kvraudio.com/get/1644.html
  • FM oscillator. Carrier tone controlled directly or via MIDI in. Input signal modulates the frequency of the oscillator. The squelch knob controls the release time of an envelope follower on the input, which envelopes the carrier tone as well, so it isn't an irritating constant tone while the input is silent. NOTE: Tiny Femme is constructed as a synth with input channels, so some hosts may not know what to do with it.
Jonas Norbergs Square-O-Matic is essentially an FM effect
http://www.acc.umu.se/~bedev/software/vst/#SQUARE
  • Square-o-matic will try to create square waves from other waves. It works best on sond that are symmetrical. That is, the upper halve (above zero) of the wave is similar to the lower halve (below zero).

The envelope follower detects the current amplitude, the attack is instantanious and the release is controlled by the Falloff knob.
Tobybear's Brush Box is similar, but read the description...
http://www.kvraudio.com/news/1404.html
  • BrushBox v1.0

BrushBox is a new, free, effect plugin, small and not complex. It uses an algorithm that sounds like a strange mixture between a ring modulator and a pitch shifter, although the source code contains neither of them...
The only place I know where to get BJ (Bo Johanson) Wavechanger is here http://www.sounduser.com/software/vstplugs/p3.html
though I think that's essentially resynthesis (my favorite in the AM/RM/FM category) - it's an oldie but a goodie.

Jackpot - thanks! :tu:

what you oughta do is buy one of those little devices for using your portable cd player in your car... the little things that put out a little fm signal so you can pick it up on your car radio. just feed it what you wanna record then record it from a real radio on a different channel.

damn that's a good idea. make sure you use an old 1980s radio that was dial based. also make sure you pick a station that's near the portugese community radio station as well as the easy rock station for some neat mixing to start your album off ;)

interesting subject :)
so - if you have reaktor - try this:

Shortwave simulates the distortions heard on old-time shortwave radio broadcasts, or old-time vinyl/shellac/victrola recordings. Includes sidebands, Morse crosstalk, crackle, poor frequency response, and waveform distortion. Listen to the ShortWave preview, featuring the straight sample, then settings for 33-1/3 rpm vinyl, 24 fps movie, and shortwave radio. Many variations are possible, with more extreme settings, milder settings, or combinations of different degradations. Free!

also you could try my unreleased VST (fx) plugin called Statiq.

yeah, dial radios are great. i used to run one through a volume pedal and delay. turning the pedal on and off real quick while adjusting the frequency gives some cool sounds... echoing whistles, beeps, parts of words... hmm... i should give that a shot again.

ndc's The Modulator 2
Hey, I might even have that one.
Thought it was just a ringmodulator.
Hmm, I should check this one out again.
Richard Wolton 4ormulator Vocoder Extreme
Hmm, I think I never got that one to work somehow.
Or it crashed Windows badly.
Bad vibes in any case.
Tiny God Tiny Femme
I have that one, too! Damn, I check my VSTs a bit more often.

You realize that I'm going to have to stalk your posts if you're making lovely plugings like this and announce them offhandedly like this, wakax!

WTF and Square-O-Matic are old, well-loved VST fx in my crazy little world.

hum let's test it :P :D
